“If I were to go back and start my weight lifting journey from the beginning, this is the plan that I would follow”
Hi, my name is James Atkinson (“Jim” to my friends and readers). I am a qualified fitness coach, ex- airborne forces (British army) and I have a very diverse past in health and fitness. From personal training, long distance running to competition bodybuilding, it is fair to say that I have changed the shape and condition of my body more than most.
Since my early teens I have been involved in weight lifting and resistance training of some description. I am now into my late thirties.
Starting off in a powerlifting environment, the doors to a new world of resistance training were thrown wide open in front of me. The possibilities of what could be achieved with the correct weight training and diet inspired me to start work on building my own body into something that I could be very proud of!
However, it would take me around eight to ten years before I found the correct path and begin to actually get some results. I will admit that I am not the quickest of learners, but if I was given the correct advice from the start, today, I would no doubt be leaps and bounds ahead of the physical development that I currently hold.
This book has a full year of progressive weight training laid out in the form of four “sub routines”.
Each one of the workouts is a progression from the previous one. This means continued muscular development. And the great thing about this kind of training is that you can repeat it year after year if you wish.
Some of the information included in this book:
- Vital fundamental material on training mentality, planning, diet and motivation.
- 4 X 12 week progressive exercise plans (A year in total)
- Explanation of the training year. Why you are training in this way
- Illustrated descriptions of all exercises included
- Accountability charts to keep you on track
- Optional healthy cooking recipes reader bonus
- And much more!
This book is written for anyone who is interested in developing their body with the use of resistance training. This type of training can be used not only for building muscle mass but for fat loss and toning alike.
If you are new to the weight lifting and bodybuilding world, you will benefit a lot more from this book, but on the flip side; if you have been in the game for a while and would like a few ideas to develop your knowledge further, you will also find this book useful.
I wish you the very best with your training and I look forward to hearing of your achievements!
Keep on lifting and I wish you every success!
Jim

I bought this book about 6 months ago based on the reviews it had and wasn’t disappointed. The thing I like about this book most is the author keeps weight training at the most basic level and doesn’t over complicate the subject, also the book nails the information you need to progress in your training journey down into quite a small book that could easily fit into your gym bag , recently I contacted James as I do cycling timetrials so couldn’t follow the 12 week format his book suggested and I got a reply very quickly with lots of sound friendly advice so if you want a no nonsense book and put in the hard work this book will provide all you need ????

The fact that there’s so few pages and the text is larger than normal is a big sign of how poor the content actually is…
The “one year” plan in a nutshell is 12 weeks on, one week off then repeat..
50 pages intro of nothing but common sense
30 pages of lame pictures of the regular exercises you do at gym
Utter waste of money.

Professional advice from an expert. I am one of those 9-stone weaklings that used to feature in Charles Atlas adverts, but I did spend a lot of my life in a sport that could be punishing – racing sailing dinghies. Later in life, I used to visit a friend who had a gym in his house, so I have played with weight training a bit, even if I did seem to my friend to be totally uncaring about upper body development. I had the muscles and cardio development I needed for what I did, and I liked being that way. I enjoyed this book, but I have one small reservation. Jim does advise you to consult your doctor, and warns that supplements are just that – only to be used in small doses – but some people who are attracted to bodybuilding are not very intelligent. I would have liked to see a warning that there are guidelines (e.g. from the European Food Safety Authority) about safe levels of creatine intake per day. If you exceed these, or of you suffer from certain medical problems, you can put yourself at serious risk.

I rarely write reviews but this book is great. It is NOT an overnight miracle cure, silver bullet or fad training/diet plan – just simple but effective workout plans that really get results if you stick to them. I’ve lost 20lbs so far and only about half way through the 2nd phase. For me the charts Jim includes have been vital to ensuring my consistency and commitment to training and I would recommend anyone looking to achieve their goals do the same as the psychological impact they have should not be underestimated. Looking forward to starting the next phase soon and will add Before and After pics once I have completed all 3 phases. Cheers Jim!

As an ex bodybuilder myself I am going back to the gym over the age of 50 now after 10 years off and downloaded this book to see how things may have changed and surprisingly they have – writers are now writing for the real person and not just us 5 days a week split system, matrix routine, isometrics hardcore bodybuilders.
I am no longer hardcore and its nice to see someone who knows what they are talking about as an old Muscle and Fitness fan a lot of what was written was just to sell Maximuslce supplements etc but this guy actually does know his stuff.
Its not for the casual gym goer , it is for people who have willpower and will actually have the ability to pursue a proper training regime – I haven’t ever tried this type of routine but I can honestly say it has made me look forward to going back after 10+ years away from the gym and getting back into the routine!
