Whenever I read a book by Gillian McAllister, I’m always left in awe by the ideas she manages to come up with, and her writing. Her latest book, Just Another Missing Person is no exception. I was hooked from the moment I read the first chapter.

We meet DCI Julia Day, who is a really intriguing character. She’s a wife, mother, and a police officer, but there are also some damning secrets in her past. But we can also see that she is someone who will go to extreme lengths to protect the people she loves, especially her family, and this includes risking her entire career. This is what makes the book so tense. When a young woman called Olivia goes missing, Julia must make sure that Olivia isn’t found, and the consequences for her if she doesn’t follow through with this, will be severe.

I thought Gillian McAllister did a brilliant job of handling the different points of view in the book. One voice which I thought came through really strongly was Lewis, the father of the missing girl. You can see the pain he is going through and his desperate need to find his daughter. This is what makes the case all the more intriguing, particularly as Julia has to lie to Lewis about her intentions. It made me wonder just how long she was going to be able to keep this up. You can see that she isn’t a bad person.

Gillian McAllister is writer who knows how to write a twist that’ll completely floor you, and the twist that does come in this book, really did take my breath away. It really does turn the novel on its head, and the way how Gillian McAllister weaves the rest of the story is done so well and she manages to tie everything up in a very satisfactory way.

Another character who I was also liked was Jonathan. Julia and Jonathan both work together really well and their personalities shine through in Gillian’s writing. You can see just how well they get on through their dialogue, and I thought the scenes when the two of them were together, were really gripping.

I’m sure when many readers get to the end of this book, that it’ll make them want to know what comes next for Julia. It does sort of feel as though her story has been wrapped up, but I, for one, definitely would like to see her return in a future book. I’m certain Just Another Missing Person, is going to be in my top ten reads of the year. If you’re a fan of Gillian McAllister’s books, you will absolutely love her latest.

A very well plotted story but felt there were just a few too many twists. Liked the social media aspects and the subtle warnings around how much information to share.

I have read a few of Gillian McAllister’s books now and have enjoyed them all.. but this has to be one of the best! There are so many twists and turns to it, and her particular style of writing thoroughly fuddles the brain (that might just be my brain!). Every chapter leaves you guessing. There is nothing worse for me than a book where you can tell from Page 2 where it’s going.. and fortunately this is just the opposite of that; even the last chapter surprised me! Highly recommended.

Wrong Place Wrong Time is probably my all time favourite thriller, so Just Another Missing Person had a lot to live up to – and it didn’t disappoint! It just proved that Gillian McAllister is a force to be reckoned with.

This book centres around three parents and their three children, who are used expertly as vessels to question the lengths we go to to protect our kids. The main protagonist is Julia, a police officer, who has secrets in her past that explode into her present, threatening everything she holds dear. My favourite character was Lewis, a father, who was the perfect embodiment of doing wrong for the right reasons.

The three narrators and the different narrative perspectives that the author chose to use were extremely cleverly done. It added mystery and suspense and enabled the ingenious plot twist which must have taken such careful planning to pull off. Like other Gillian McAllister books, it’ll make you want to go back to the beginning and start reading all over again!

Apart from the mind-bending plots, the perfect pacing and the accomplished writing, what I really love about this author is her ability to make a book real. The situations the characters face might at times be surreal, but they are always emotionally rooted in the real world with the same problems as the rest of us. JAMP touches on parent-sibling relationships, what it means to be a ‘good’ person, and what constitutes an identity. There are many many novels out there about missing people, but this one is the only one I’ve read which really make me think about what it means to exist and therefore what it means to be missing. It’s not so much a psychological thriller as an emotional one.

And talking of twists – although the mid-point twist is the one the book really hinges around, there are a plethora of others throughout the story which just keep coming until the very end, all of which are stunningly done. If you want a gripping book that will keep you up all night, then look no further.

There are a lot of strands to the plot of JAMP, and I did start to suspect towards the end that some may not be tied up – but then she’d go and answer my question and it was all closed off nicely. If I was to be realllyy picky, I wasn’t convinced by one particular element involving the contents of a locker – it wasn’t so believable and I think the story would have worked without some of it – but that doesn’t detract from this book earning a solid 5 stars.

I’ve just read the extract from Gillian’s next novel which is included at the end of this one, and boy am I excited! She is at the top of her game and I can’t recommend her or this book highly enough.
