I’ve found that much of the information on tortoises on the web can be vague, wishy-washy and contradictory; no doubt you’ll find many different people on the internet suggesting different things for tortoise husbandry. Some of the big debates are of course substrate used and food fed. This book does an excellent job at being informative and to the point. It states (from an extremely experienced point of view) exactly what to do in order to maintain a healthy pet tortoise – what is right and what is most definitely wrong. Whilst it covers all manner of tortoise species from those that occupy the Russian steppes to the tropics, it was particularly helpful for information regarding Hermann and Horsefield species – two of the more common pet tortoises in the U.K. I would sincerely suggest that anyone who was thinking about getting a pet tortoise got this book as it’ll cover everything and more that you’ll need to know and in few over 60 pages. It’s one afternoons light reading and you’ll feel like a tortoise expert at the end of it! Excellent book!

Very good informative book if your starting out as a first time tortoise owner don’t expect a 1000 page encyclopaedia but never the less a great little book and a good price

This was a present for a young grandson (to help with a new tortoise): I haven’t had any report on the book from him yet but it looked fine to me.

Seems obvious but if you have or are getting a tortoise then this book provides a good “how to do”….everything guide for your pet. From bedding, to temperature, to feeding and so on.
If you don’t have a tortoise then this isn’t the book for you….

Having just bought two baby tortoises, this book was very helpful in explaining the different types of tortoises and how they differ from each other. It is more general than buying a book on a particular type so does not go into too much depth about any one species. However, it does give help on feeding and caring which are the most important things to know when starting out!
