It is based on fifty picture and verbal scenarios that can be used flexibly with a wide range of ages and abilities. Quick, practical and easy to use in the classroom, this programme can be used with individual children, in small groups or can form the basis of a literacy lesson or speech language therapy session.
Key Features include:
- question sheets are carefully structured to promote children’s development of inference, verbal reasoning and thinking skills
- the three parallel assessments of spoken and written language can be used to assess each child’s starting level and then to monitor progress
- score forms and worksheets for each lesson are included.
The book is particularly useful for children who are recognised as having delayed language skills, specific language impairment, Autism Spectrum Disorder (including Asperger’s Syndrome), pragmatic language impairment or moderate learning difficulties.
The second edition has been updated with a simplified introduction. All illustrations and worksheets will now be available online.

Fantastic resource, really good for SEND
by Hackney girl
I am a mom of a child with language difficulties so I bought this book to help her with her language skills at home. This book is very easy to use even by people who have no training in education so even moms and dads can use to deliver Speach and Language “Language for THinking” intervention.
The only criticism is that is not printed on a very robust paper and you need to buy a plastic cover to protect the original cover.

This is a photocopied book with black and white drawings. It is not worth the extra cost. Buy direct from the publisher.

This is a really good, structured resource to support the development of children’s thinking skills. Assessment material for establishing a baseline and monitoring progress are provided while the 50 intervention scenarios offer plenty of choice for supporting children’s verbal reasoning skills. The principals of the programme can be applied to whole class teaching as well as small group/individual intervention sessions. The new edition is visually more interesting.
