’You never knew what you were going to be confronted with when you went on Later…’ Nick Cave
‘Later… is a voyage of discovery for us as well as the viewers’ Dave Grohl
Dave Grohl and Alicia Keys loved it, Björk treasured it, Ed Sheeran’s life was changed by it, Kano felt at home while Nick Cave was horrified but inspired, and they all kept coming back.
This first-hand account of the BBC’s Later… with Jools Holland takes you behind the scenes of one of the world’s great musical meeting places. Legends including Sir Paul McCartney, Mary J. Blige and David Bowie found a regular welcome, alongside the next generation of superstars including Adele, Ed Sheeran and Amy Winehouse. Part of what has made the show so special is the format – all those bands, singers, stars and newbies brought together to listen as well as to perform in Jools’ circle of dreams. But there’s always been plenty of mayhem alongside the magic of convening a room full of musicians hosted by one of their own.
Written by the show’s co-creator and 26-year showrunner, music journalist Mark Cooper, this is the story of how Later… grew into a musical and TV institution. It was Mark who had to explain to Jay-Z why he couldn’t just do his numbers and split, who told Seasick Steve why he had to play ‘Dog House Boogie’ on the Hootenanny and persuaded Johnny Cash that he simply had to come in, even when The Man in Black wasn’t feeling well.
From Stormzy to Björk, from Smokey Robinson to Norah Jones, from Britpop to trip hop, here is the word on how Later… began, evolved and has endured, accompanied by exclusive interviews with some of the show’s regular stars as well as the unique pictorial record of Andre Csillag who photographed the show for over 20 years. A must-read for music fans everywhere, Later… with Jools Hollandpulls back the curtain on classic performances to reveal that the show is just as magical, if even more chaotic, than you imagined.

Later…is a music show that pushes artists of all genres and experience to front of stage, and the show and this book really celebrates that diversity. That’s the positive about this read.
However, the read is quite repetitive after 400 or so pages, and I struggled with what felt like the same stories being said over and over. Maybe best read a chapter every few months? I personally needed to take some breaks.

I am in my sixties and being British, I never saw these dvds -or videos as they used to be -because they were not screened in the UK . A pity, because they were good fun and I really enjoyed watching them. It’s sad that all the members of this family have passed on . Ricky Nelson was a talented handsome man who entertained millions with his songs and he deserves credit for that, although he was taken from us far too soon. RIP Ozzie, Harriet, David and “Little Ricky”.

So fasincating to hear the background and the anecdotes about TV’s best (now only?) music show. Loved all the stories and the personal recollections written for the author by people like Bjork and Nick Cave – so funny to hear Cave metaphorically gulp as he has realises he’s about to follow The Darkness at their loudest and silliest with an acoustic ballad. Great book by a gentleman of the music world.

This is a great read. The writer’s passion for the show and the music industry leaps off the page.
The book is full of the many artists who have appeared on the show, including those at the very start of their career and others who are living legends. It’s fascinating to read how the show is put together, including the challenges of juggling different artists on the same show.
There are also some really good pieces written by artists who regularly appeared on the show, (including k.d. Lang, Richard Thompson, Nick Cave, Ed Sheeran, Jack White and Dave Grohl) – and some great photos over the years.
It’s a great Christmas present but I didn’t want to wait for someone to give it to me! Highly recommend.
