Let’s Sign and DOWN SYNDROME: Signs for Children with Special Needs

This collection of British Sign Language (BSL) Signs provides a Core Vocabulary starting point for learners, with 280 signs arranged in topics essential to everyday experiences rather than ‘stages’ which may not match the diverse needs of all its users.
Dr Wendy Uttley’s introduction, guidelines, practice sentences and early language development activities, clearly outline how the use of signs and speech together can help language and communication develop, pointing out the benefits and enjoyment it can bring to all involved.
This is not only relevant for children and young people with Down Syndrome but is equally beneficial to the estimated 6 – 8% of children between the ages of 0 – 11 who have additional speech, language and communication needs.
The engaging line drawings with written descriptions give clear details of handshapes and movements with particular attention to the face, a crucial element in all of our communication and for children and young people with additional language and communication needs in particular.
