Life Force: A Painter’s Response to the Nature Poetry of Ted Hughes
£23.70£28.50 (-17%)
This stunning sequence of 34 abstract works by artist Louise Fletcher takes its inspiration from the poetry of former UK poet laureate Ted Hughes (1930–1998) and the evocative setting of the Yorkshire moors. With quotations from Hughes’s work included alongside the pieces they inspired, moving commentary by Louise detailing their background and inclusive of preliminary sketches and photography, this wonderfully produced hardback documents a journey through both literature, creativity and the landscape. Appealing to a broad audience of artists and potential artists, appreciators of the work of Hughes and all who are interested in contemporary art and the relationship between poetry and the visual, this reflection on the creative process is a personal and profound insight into how great art can continue to move us so profoundly.

Very informative and inspiring

It’s a great size, not too large or cumbersome that you can’t take it out and spend some time with a coffee under a tree reading if you want. The quality of the photos is excellent.
Most importantly I loved reading about Louise’s process. It gave great insight into how and why she creates the paintings she does. It isn’t often that you get an artist writing about her work, it is usually written by someone else and often posthumously. Great gift for anyone who is interested in art

This is an absolutely great book. Not only do the photos show you all the details, marks, “history” but the text is very well written (and the paintings are gorgeous, too). It’s as if Louise is speaking directly to you, with an open, vulnerable heart. She precisely and honestly describes the ups and downs of her process, the wrong turns and how she found the path again. Louise is profoundly honest, allowing her strengths and vulnerabilities to show at every turn. The depth and breadth of this process is pretty amazing and wherever he is, Ted Hughes will be proud and grateful to have his work so beautifully loved and reflected. And Louise is a Life Force unto herself!

Very well illustrated and written. One of the best books I have found on the process of finding art from within. Abstract art is hard – this book shows some of the steps you can take.

The author is very generous in giving insights and tips into how she creates a work of art.

There’s nothing to dislike about this book. It’s a feast for the eyes and has been written from the heart of its creator who paints from the same place. I’m finding the book an emotional and an inspirational read. Louise is honest and open and unceasingly generous in her art and she continues this in this wonderful book.

Louise is a wonderful painter and in this book shares her creative process, highlighting all the highs and lows.
Paired with the poetry of Ted Hughes, the Yorkshire landscape comes alive in all its stark beauty

My goodness! – What a beautiful and inspiring book this is.
Artist, Louise Fletcher, explores two of her greatest passions – her lifelong love of art and the nature poetry of Ted Hughes, (both passions I also share!) She illuminates her mark-making process, (all the struggles, the joys and epiphanies) alongside delicious, full-colour photographs of her work.
This book had a profound impact on me. Her paintings are beautiful and full of the spirit of the natural world. Often a book promises so much, but leaves me wanting a little more somehow, but this book really delivered on all my expectations. I whole heartedly recommend this book to all artists and, of course, all lovers of nature, nature writing and the work of Ted Hughes. Stunning!
