Linocut: A Creative Guide to Making Beautiful Prints
£19.00
A step-by-step guide on how to create personal and contemporary linocut prints.
A linocut is a relief print created by carving a design into a printing block. It is the uncut surface, not the carved away areas, that gives you your image when you roll it with ink, lay paper on top then apply pressure to produce a print.
With 18 easy-to-follow projects that can be adapted to suit your own ideas, experienced printmaker Sam Marshall guides you through the whole process – from the drawing to the carving to the inking to the printing – of creating your own beautiful prints and handmade cards whether you are working from your kitchen table or a more advanced studio set-up.
By taking inspiration from everyday life, Sam helps you to build your confidence with observational drawing. Featuring step-by-step projects, the book demonstrates a range of skills with low-cost materials to produce simple linocuts, reduction linocuts and colourful multi-block prints. You will also learn more experimental techniques such as combining monoprint, chine collé, jigsaw linocuts and rainbow rolls and pick up handy tips on subjects such as ‘noise’ and editioning your prints.
Beautifully illustrated with photographs of Sam’s own drawings and linocuts, and featuring the work of 5 talented printmakers, Linocut is an essential guide to linocut printmaking. Packed with creative and practical advice to guide and encourage you, whether you’re just starting out, returning to the craft or looking to expand your printmaking skills.

This is a well written and friendly book introducing lino cutting and taking you beyond the beginner stuff. Also beautifully illustrated. Best lino book out there in my view. Thank you!

I love this book! It is full of practical information and tips, giving me the confidence to try my hand at more advanced techniques. I’ve invested in some better equipment and started to have a go at Sam’s easy-to-follow exercise projects.

This is one of the best practical art books I’ve ever owned – it’s full of hugely helpful detail, commentary, and examples. It really does take you from first steps in linocut right the way through to a career in art. based on enormous depth of experience, it’s still an imaginative and exciting read. Hugely recommended.

I’ve just started dabbling in linocut so I bought this book to start. Great book, very informative and some very good ideas. Highly recommended for beginners and experienced printers alike.

A chatty, informative and engaging book which takes you from basic mark making on lino to practice using your tools,, through the carving process to the many ways that you can make prints – all without the need for a printing press. The book is set out as individual projects with each project introducing new techniques and it has proper step-by-step photo instructions and explanations.. Sam even tells you what to do should you go wrong! Sam is an excellent guide and a great motivator. There were several a-ha! moments when reading the later projects as I realised how prints I’d seen at a recent exhibition had been created by the artists. This is definitely the best book that I’ve read on lino cutting.
I purchased the Kindle version (as well as a copy of the book direct from Sam) but it wouldn’t download to the app on my Windows 10 laptop and I received an error message. I had to download the app again from Amazon before the book would download to my laptop.
