Most of us have a conversation we’re avoiding.
From the bestselling author of With the End in Mind, this is a book about the conversations that matter and how to have them better – more honestly, more confidently and without regret.
A child coming out to their parent. A family losing someone to terminal illness. A friend noticing the first signs of someone’s dementia. A careers advisor and a teenager with radically different perspectives.
There are moments when we must talk, listen and be there for one another. Why do we so often come away from those times feeling like we could have done more, or should have been braver in the face of discomfort? Why do we skirt the conversations that might matter most?
By bringing together stories with a lifetime’s experience working in medicine and the newest psychology, Mannix offers lessons for how we can better speak our mind and help when others need to.
Kathryn Mannix’s ‘With the End in Mind’ was a Sunday Times bestseller the weeks ending 6 January 2018, 13 January 2018 and 3 February 2018.

Heard this lady on a webinar for healthcare professionals. She has the calmest, most relaxing delivery – highly recommend this book for anyone working in health and social care who has to have difficult and emotional conversations.

One of the best books on listening I have read. I recommend regularly to people we are training to coach. And also brilliant to help anyone having conversations about dying. Useful

Fascinating insights and advice on how to approach and handle difficult conversations. Useful in all walks of life, not just for those working with those in end-of-life situations

I think this excellent book addresses the almost taboo subject of death and dying, written with empathy, care and consideration. It brought me to tears at times but is very well written and I drew comfort from each of it’s individual stories. A must read if you want to be prepared for yourself, your family or to support someone who is terminally ill.

I have thoroughly enjoyed this book and will be sharing it widely. I have found it a great antidote to my people pleasing/helping tendencies and it’s a reminder that simply being there and being present alongside someone who is experiencing difficulties in life is often the kindest and most productive way to help. It is not up to us to provide the solutions and answers for others. What’s most important is communicating our willingness to help the other person find their own way out of the dark woods. This book is helping me just now in conversations with my elderly dad about his future options.
