‘Warm, sweet wish-fulfilment, with cute illustrations perfectly pitched for 6-plus’ Guardian
A collection of two warm and funny stories about Luma and her cheeky pet dragon.
When Luma Dewan wakes up on the morning of her seventh birthday, she knows that today will be special. But she has no idea just how wonderful and extraordinary it will be.
For today is the day she will meet Timir – a real talking dragon. Or at least when Luma is around that’s what he is. When anyone else is there, he becomes an ordinary grey puppy with a fluffy tail, who loves chasing squirrels and bouncing on trampolines.
It’s a big secret to keep – and Luma’s clever cousin Arjun is soon suspicious of this peculiar puppy, who doesn’t quite behave like any other dog. Luckily Luma’s grandmother – Nani – is there to help, and to Luma’s surprise, Nani might just know a little dragon magic of her own . . .

I’m so thrilled there’s a new dragon series for younger readers to enjoy. It’s always seemed as though there are lots of brilliant picture books featuring dragons for readers to enjoy but not much to move on to when they want a wordier read. The Luma titles will perfectly bridge this gap. Each title actually features two mini stories in one, making completing the book easily achievable for newly confident readers.
The clear print, liberal scattering of illustrations, and just the right amount of cheekiness from baby dragon, Timir make these very appealing reads indeed. The relatable family set-up with a wise grandma, a flustered mum, and slightly nosy cousins adds to the warmth and charm of the stories.
Highly recommended for readers aged 6+

Luma is excited to get a long awaited puppy for her birthday, but when the day comes there has been a mix up with the litter and Luma is forced to go away empty handed. When she visits her beloved grandmother later that day however, a strange creature emerges from the bushes. It looks like a puppy to everyone else, but to Luma and her grandmother it is a baby dragon, and Luma’s inheritance. As Luma learns to be a puppy/dragon tamer, things get messy in this endearing and funny chapter book which is perfect for 5-8 year olds. The first of a series, this will capture the imagination of boys and girls alike.

Full of fun, mischief and magic, this is a glorious new series for early readers. Luma is excited to be getting a puppy for her birthday, but it turns out to be a baby dragon instead. So begins a charming adventure with beautiful illustrations that kids will love – highly recommended.

Every kid dreams of their first pet, and Luma is no different: she knows exactly which puppy she wants and what she is going to name her. However, instead of a puppy she soon finds herself taking on the big responsibility of caring for a mischievous baby dragon! This book is full of charm, humour and magical fun. Perfect for young readers keen to adopt their first pets and those who love stories about magical creatures. It also has a wonderful family dynamic and I particularly loved Luma’s relationship with her Nani, who knows more than a little about dragon keeping. The illustrations by Loretta Schauer are full of character and perfectly compliment the stories. I can’t wait to read more of Luma and Timir’s adventures!
