Alan Rickman remains one of the most beloved actors of all time across almost every genre, from his breakout role as Die Hard’s villainous Hans Gruber to his heart-wrenching run as Professor Severus Snape, and beyond. His air of dignity, his sonorous voice and the knowing wit he brought to each role continue to captivate new audiences today.
But Rickman’s artistry wasn’t confined to just his performances. Rickman’s writing details the extraordinary and the ordinary in a way that is anecdotal, indiscreet, witty, gossipy and utterly candid. He takes us behind the scenes on films and plays ranging from Sense & Sensibility, the Harry Potter series, Private Lives, My Name Is Rachel Corrie and many more.
The diaries run from 1993 to his death in 2016 and offer insight into both a public and private life. Here is Rickman the consummate professional actor, but also the friend, the traveller, the fan, the director, the enthusiast: in short, the real Alan Rickman. Here is a life fully lived, all detailed in intimate and characteristically plain-spoken prose. Reading the diaries is like listening to Rickman chatting to a close friend.
Madly, Deeply also includes a foreword by Emma Thompson and a selection of Rickman’s early diaries, dating from 1974 to 1982, when his acting life first began.

I’m struggling with Alan Rickman’s ‘Madly Deeply’. Struggling, that is, with the impression it conveys of him, whom I’ve loved in everything I’ve seen him in. I suppose that’s the measure of how good an actor he was. (He does not come over as very lovable. In fairness, it’s a diary: he wasn’t trying to make himself sound good, but he certainly does not.)
It’s also not very readable, because it’s in true diary format, i.e. cryptic (yes, maybe I should have thought of that), but also because I simply don’t ‘get’ a lot of it. (Who??) Part of my problem was the Notes. On a Kindle, they come at the end of each chapter rather than at the foot of the individual pages. This makes referring to them – ‘who the **** is this person? – more time-consuming than I can easily deal with.
But leaving them to the end means I have forgotten what each item referred to, so when I reach the explanatory ‘English theatre director’, or ‘A.R.’s hairdresser’, it means nothing to me. Of course, if I’d had an idea of who they all were in the first place…
Maybe one for dedicated ‘thesps’.

Haven’t read it yet but it was very well packaged and in pristine condition

Edited extracts from AR’s diaries – you could argue it should have been more severely edited as there’s lots of trivia, but I liked that the more ordinary stuff was in there too. It felt more personal. He’s sadly missed.

It’s sad to read this books after Alan’s passing, it gives us an insight into his journey through navigating life as a national treasure. I loved it ❤️????️

The whole transaction was perfect up until I opened the package. Product was great, Price was great, Delivery was a day early and the package was undamaged. Unfortunately, whoever picked/packed the book was eating a KFC at the same time. There were greasy finger marks on the front and back of the book, not a good sight for a new product. It won’t stop me from reading the book but I’ll personally shop at Waterstones for future book purchases.

This is indeed a diary just like anyone would write – daily jottings of sometimes inconsequential events in everyday life. I read a lot of novels so it took a while to get used to reading a book made up entirely of snippets of someone’s thoughts. There were times when i was fascinated by reading his opinions on both personal and world events. There were also times when I felt ‘uncomfortable’ like I was reading thoughts not meant for anyone else to share. There were a lot of people I have heard of mentioned throughout this diary and also a lot of people I didn’t know (directors etc.,). The book is a mix of emotions both from the author but also for the reader.
