Maggie Matheson: Last Orders: (The Maggie Matheson Collection Book 3)

£3.99

Britain’s favourite senior spook, Maggie Matheson, returns, this time facing a new threat from within as a rogue agent plays the world’s Superpowers off against each other, using that most valuable of commodities: information.

“A brilliant mix of confident secret agent, determined older lady, and outrageous friend.”
“Everyone’s Nan, but with the sass of a bad-ass.”

Bruised and battered after her last case, Maggie is a shadow of her feisty former self. But when a double-dealing double agent threatens to disclose nuclear codes, she is inclined to answer her country’s call to help. The opportunity to heal past hurts seals the deal.

Meanwhile, other shady individuals are at large; shady individuals who want to make sure she goes out with a whimper and a bang. Does she still have the cunning, courage and clout to crack the case? Will her last orders be a curtain call? Or is it finally curtains for Maggie?

Last Orders is the third and final cosy mystery book in the Maggie Matheson Collection. Essential feel-good reading for fans of Richard Osman’s Murder Club.

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed reading the last in the series of the Maggie Matheson, senior spy adventures.
Despite creaking bones, depleted energy levels, and little tolerance for modern technology, Maggie uses her gut, wisdom and more than a few cups of tea to sort fact from fiction, wheat from chaff, good from bad, and order from chaos, while creating more than a little of her own along the way.
The author has created a quirky, clever, and endearing character in Maggie, along with a witty, amusing writing style which keeps you chuckling, wondering and turning the pages to the bitter end.
    A thoroughly recommended read.

Maggie Matheson is back for her third and, apparently, last episode. She is a beautifully written character and I especially like her challenges with today`s technology. Conversations and thoughts like these are probably had up and down the country, but none are treated so sensitively as the light touch and dry wit displayed by Hornett.
Look out for the hilarious one liners and puns that intersperse the twists and turns of this book at regular intervals: * “A password needs the name of your history teacher`s pet iguana.” * “When I hear words like crime fighting, I just think of Batman. Do go on. Sorry.” * “387 steps in 3 minutes? Tell him we`ll be there next Tuesday.” and A Sale of Two Kitties (Wool Shop) are just a little sample of my favourites.
Definitely a five star. Neat ending…no spoilers here!

Senior spy Maggie is back in espionage action, and the plot twists- and the jokes – come thick and fast. Aching bones, exhaustion and the urgent need for another cup of tea won’t stop Maggie from uncovering the villains dangerously pitting the world’s major spy agencies against each other. Another fast-paced, and very funny, outing for Maggie and her motley crew. I loved it. Maggie is a fabulous character, and the sly humour in the series reaches new highs in this chapter. Let’s hope it’s not the last!

Good to see Maggie finally realising she is still a skilled spy with her main weapon talking. This time there are so many surprising twists and turns and even though you are now expecting them you are still surprised. Right up to the last sentence. Hope this isn’t the final Maggie book. A surprising 4th book perhaps.

    Maggie Matheson – last orders

Full of slick one liners and the cleverly penned inconveniences of older age the redoubtable super-spy is out of retirement yet again and on the trail of criminals determined to threaten world peace.
She’s also on the trail of her son who she dares to believe could be alive despite the evidence to the contrary. Darker and more poignant than the previous books in the series because we sense Maggie seriously wounded by personal loss and more frail than previously.
An interesting mix of emotions as we follow our octogenarian spy through her last adventures – perhaps?

At last the third book about our retired spy returns. Been desperate to know what happened with Ben- but I’m not telling ! Maggie at her best using her honed skills to bring justice in yet another entertaining story. Ian Hornett writes with immense humour and dry wit and brings Maggie alive in many laugh out loud moments . A must read if you enjoyed the first two books. Buy the series for Christmas presents you won’t be disappointed !
