£4.70£7.60 (-38%)

Nobody visits Eerie-on-Sea in the winter. Especially not when darkness falls and the wind howls around Maw Rocks and the wreck of the battleship Leviathan, where even now some swear they have seen the unctuous Malamander creep…

Herbert Lemon, Lost-and-Founder at the Grand Nautilus Hotel, knows that returning lost things to their rightful owners is not easy – especially when the lost thing is not a thing at all, but a girl. No one knows what happened to Violet Parma’s parents twelve years ago, and when she engages Herbie to help her find them, the pair discover that their disappearance might have something to do with the legendary sea-monster, the Malamander. Eerie-on-Sea has always been a mysteriously chilling place, where strange stories seem to wash up. And it just got stranger…

    Chuck Davis:
I’m reviewing this book because it was our class book and we have come to the end of the story. This is an interesting book written by Thomas Taylor.
This is a book about an ancient creature, The malamander. The two main characters are Herbert Lemon and Violet Parmer. My favorite part is the first chapter where they try to encourage the reader by saying `This book isn’t for you, wrap it up in a box and throw it off the pier.` I kept reading the book because it was action-packed.
My favorite characters are Violet and Herbie. My favorite bits are the first and last chapter because in the last chapter they say they will try to find more adventures together and I’m excited about its sequel.
I give this book 4.25 stars out of 5
I would add to the story by having more dramatic scenes.

    Donita Korthe:
I’m reviewing this book as it is one of the best books out there and to tell you the best parts. It’s set on a beachfront town of Cheerie (eerie ) on sea and the two main characters are a boy Herbert ( herby ) lemon and a girl violet Parma .
In the book it’s violet trying to find her parents as they went missing when she was a baby ( like Herbert ) . But the place herby worked at once catered for the father and mother of violet which is how Herbert met violet. One of my favourite parts is when violet sees her parents on the beach after spotting the unctuous malamander in the ocean. My favourite character in this book was Violet as she was determined to find her parents or what happened to them. One of the things that got me hooked it always ended on a cliff hanger and you wanted to read more.
My rating out of five stars ⭐️ would be ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I wish it was longer or had other books in a series of events to find both the malamander and the missing parents.

    PJ Wyndorf:
I am reviewing this book because I would like to tell people how amazing this book is.
The story is mainly set in a place called earie on sea. The main characters are Violet and Herbie. Violet and Herbie are good friends who try to stop Eels stealing a special egg. The egg is so special it can grant you any wish and it belongs to the Malamander. My favourite characters are Violet and Herbie because they are in the story a lot. The book kept me hooked and intrested, at the end of every chapter I had so many question and wanted to, carry on reading. I would’nt change anything about the book so I would rate this book 5/5.

This is an absolute cracker of a salty legend with shivers and scares a plenty . Don’t do what I did and read this late at night and need to read something ‘calming’ to let the Adrenaline run its course!!
The writing is excellent with a sensory immersion thanks to the use of present tense in the narrative and description. This extends to the names throughout which are wonderfully inventive (S)Herbert Lemon, Miss Parma (Violet), Ambergriss and more. Many have a multi sensory factor particularly of taste and scent so you may develop a sort of synesthesia about certain characters which then transfers to the landscape where you can almost taste the salty air and petrichor.
There’s something wonderful and yet quintessentially British eccentric about this seaside tale that could fit in any eerily empty seaside town in winter And I loved the whole concept of your fortune being read of the book you need like a panacea for your problems is such a beautiful metaphor for reading for pleasure.

I’m so excited to see where these characters will take us in the future. Absolutely fantastic.

Many thanks to Walker Books for the review copy, this has not affected my opinion

The setting for this book, Eerie-on-Sea, might just be one of my favourite book settings ever. I mean when you have a creepy seaside town filled with legends and an abundance of mystery, what’s not to love? I also adore the characters especially my favourite professional Beachcomber and excellent scone maker, Mrs Fossil. The main character Herbie, is also a total sweetheart and the friendship between him and Violet was so adorable to read about. If you’re looking for a middle grade series that is a little bit spooky, very mysterious and filled with exciting adventure, I can’t recommend this series enough!

Our book-mad ten-year old daughter enjoyed every page of this book. The fast paced adventure story is very engaging with enjoyable characters that each have a peculiar name and that are vividly brought to life. The dark and spooky atmosphere of the setting Eerie-on-sea provides a great backdrop for story telling. Our young reader found the plot slightly predictable and the main villain a little one dimensional I suppose. Still it is a tense and exciting read overall.
We ordered the softcover version that comes with a lovely decorated cover. The book also contains a helpful map
Malamander apparently is a the first of a series, so our daughter can’t wait to get her literary hands on the second volume.

I found Malamander to be a wonderful read with rich storytelling throughout. I have every intention of using passages from this book as models when teaching writing this year (for my Year 4s).

The language is both vividly descriptive and just the right shade of challenging, and there are more than a handful of phrases that caught my eye for how wonderfully well-crafted they are.

The overall plot was engaging and I could see my previous class (now moving into year 5) enjoying this book simply for the story itself.

I will definitely be recommending it to my class from this year onwards.
