This pictorial survey not only gives an accurate record of the changing nature of travel by land, sea and air, but each picture is also a detailed portrait of a particular scene, with the type of transport meticulously portrayed.
Malcolm Root was born in Colchester in 1950 and still lives in nearby Halstead. From an early age he combined his love of art with a fascination for all kinds of transport. On leaving school he entered the printing industry and in 1981 took the decision to become a full- time professional artist. Commissions followed, particularly for railway scenes and in 1983 he was elected a full member of the Guild of Railway Artists. Malcolm’s paintings have encompassed almost every form of transport from horse and cart and tram to Concorde and `le Shuttle’. They have also appeared in many forms including fine art prints, collectors’ plates, jigsaws, calendars and books.

If you want to see the work of a brilliant artist who can paint most things this is the book for you. each time you look at the pictures you see something else to admire. For those of a certain age the pictures bring back many memories.

If you want to see the transport scene evolve via artwork, then you really need to obtain a copy of this particular book. It is the fourth one by Malcolm Root that I have purchased and equally as good as the others. As per usual the colour plates are extremely good and the narrative provided by Tom Tyler compliments these extremely well, making it very difficult to put down once you have started to read it and you will find yourself absorbed by the scenes depicted, which may even stimulate a few memories.

An excellent publication featuring Malcom Root transport paintings as well as an informative narrative by Tom Tyler. There are two other publications highlighting this subject.
All are excellent taking the reader sometimes back to the past featuring all types of transport fondly remembered by myself and others…70 plus…..or even older…as well as younger.
I would recommend this book to readers and hope that more examples will appear in print sometime in the furture.
