Both my mom and I are ecstatic with the fast arrival of the book, as we both have been learning Chinese for something close to two years. The dictionary is really nice! It’s got all sorts of vocabulary, listed by topic; words are easy to find and easy to understand.
The fact that it has an audio component is especially nice!
We enjoy talking daily in Chinese but, sometimes, we lack the words for certain common objects, and I’m sure this dictionary will come in handy for that! The fact that the book itself is small will make it easier to bring with us when we go out.
My only complaint is that the letters themselves are a bit too small.

I bought this as someone new to Mandarin wanting a dictionary to begin learning. This was getting universally great reviews and recommendations so I thought I’d go for it. The pictures would be pointless, but perhaps they could be a good memory aid, to actually see the things that you are talking about while you are learning the words. But it turns out this was a big mistake. As a beginner you want to be learning all the most common words, but with the limited number available in this book, it is missing many common words that I already learned, or came across before, and instead it is filled with a lot of the most absurdly rare words that you will never use in your life. So it’s a good reference book for rarer words, grouped into subjects, like science and medicine.
This subject-based way of searching, with words randomly scattered all over the pages is not a very efficient way to find words. And the indexes, instead of just telling you the translation of a word, it tells you the page that you have to find, and then search the page to find the word you are looking for. And sometimes it’s multiple pages if the word is referenced multiple times, or may be a different word with the same sound, so you have to laboriously check them all. And of course each word has only ONE translation, and no more information than that. It’s pretty useless, especially when that translation is different to what you’ve already learned, so you’re just confused, and you can’t even trust any of the translations because they’re just not detailed enough, and they contradict information from other books!
In summary, get a PROPER bilingual lexicon, that has ALL the most COMMON words, with proper definitions which actually help you understand what the words mean and how they are correctly used!

This is another excellent visual reference book from DK.
It has an extensive vocabulary that covers many aspects of
modern life.
My only critique is that there should have been more
visual representation of the Chinese people and their
culture.
