Book came fine on time just the CD does not work tried on multiple occasions, this kind of book needs a teacher or CD to help with the pronunciation or else who knows what you’ll sound like a

I’ve been teaching from this book for a while and the mistakes are becoming more apparent. On page 97 xuyao is spelt incorrectly as xueyao. In the same dialogue, the tone for dian (o’clock) is written as first when it should be third. On page 69 then mingtian is written as third tone when it should read second. These mistakes are confusing students and really should have been picked up before this Second Edition was published.

I find it quite a good book for learning Mandarin, though not alone but in conjunction with an online course. The CD is mp3 and as such is not as user friendly as a regular CD.

Brilliant wee book. I love the cultural advice, would love to ask the author if she could do a whole book on just that, it would be a very interesting read. Im teaching myself Chinese, beginner, and everyones different and like to learn differently but I prefer to use textbooks. This is really good. You could just use it on a really basic level and do the bare minimum the book suggests and learn the basic phrases, which are all really useful everyday things, or if like me youre in it for the longhaul and want to learn the language more thoroughly (i want to take it all the way up to high level fluency) you can get a lot more out of this book by using it as a queue/starting point to go looking up more words/grammar points than you need to. For example, ive just nearly finished Unit 1 where she gives a very basic easy description of a couple of easy grammar points. But I then looked those exact same points she was making up in my really good grammar book I bought, which goes into it in much more detail. So I get the easy to understand version here, then can choose to look it up a bit more if I choose to. Also I love that she has a classical short poem and idioms/sayings in each chapter. Im going into my 1st poem looking up all the individual words (you dont need to, theres an English translation of everything in this book)because again that helps me to build up my vocab to a much higher level and helps me understand more how the language works. So this book is good on an easier level but can also be used at a higher level if you want to go there, and make extra work for yourself! Enjoyable to use, I would recommend it.

I am so pleased with this Conversational Chinese Mandarin for beginners, I wish I had found it before the numerous others that I had the sense to return in the end. Ever since I bought the Easy Peasy Chinese Mandarin for beginners, which gave me such a great foundation of Chinese Mandarin, I started searching for something with lots of intermediate conversations and there is was at long last. This Conversational Chinese Mandarin for beginners was printed in Singapore. It is accompanied by an MP3 audio file disk which covers all 16 chapters of the book. It covers every thing you would want to know how to ask when visiting China, even the Tea House and not lest – the bank. I think it is an extremely well arranged book and well informative. Your music player will play the disk, which you can copy to a USB/MP3 for back up – alternatively you can use a computer as they are word files.
    Highly recommended.
