It all started with a map… Maps of the Disney Parks are more than just atlases used by guests to find their way to Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. They are snapshots of a place and time, relics treasured by collectors, and gorgeous pieces of artwork. In fact, it was a map (imagined by Walt Disney and drawn by Herbert Ryman) that was used to sell the idea of Disneyland to investors. Unfold this book of beautiful maps from when the very first Disney Park opened in 1955 right up to today. Discover details on how and why the domestic and international parks have changed over time, and enjoy sixty years worth of skillful creativity. Bought as a gift for someone who knows more about Disney than the average punter and if it’s good enough for him, it must be good.

First I have given this book an extra star because I like Disney Parks! I found quite a lot of the maps to be too small, in fact some of the text was so small that even with a magnifying lens it was unreadable. The close up pictures focused on certain areas of the park and a lot of stuff was missed. I would like to have seen more maps from over the years giving a better picture of the evolution of the parks over time, showing more eateries and shops too. I think it would have been better to have released a ‘Disney Park Map Collection’ and included a smaller book.

If your partner is a Disney geek/cartographer, this is a must get. The book itself is coffee book style, came the cover splits in two to protect the pages. As an official Disney product too, it’s a quality product as you would expect.

This book is a great presentation of the evolution of the Disney theme parks providing some great examples of concept art and some early maps. I would recommend it for Disney fans who love the parks or the history around the beloved brand.
However, the reason for a 3 star review is that I thought I was getting (I quote from the description 12/11/2016) a “book bursting with beautiful maps from when the very first Disney Park opened in 1955 right up to today,” There are little maps and more what I would call concept art for the parks. My impression from a book titled ‘Maps of the Disney Parks’ is to get a historical collection of the park maps illustrating how the y have evolved in art style over the years.
This is still a great purchase and the book is high quality, just not as described. Hopefully Amazon read this and amend the product description and Disney bring out an actual book of maps.
