The new compact hardback edition of the bestselling Mark Hearld’s Work Book, the first collection of the artist’s beguiling art. Mark Hearld finds his inspiration in the flora and fauna of the British countryside: a blue-eyed jay perched on an oak branch; two hares enjoying the spoils of an allotment; a mute swan standing at the frozen water’s edge; and a sleek red fox prowling the fields. Hearld admires such twentieth-century artists as Edward Bawden, John Piper, Eric Ravilious and Enid Marx, and, like them, he chooses to work in a range of media – paint, print, collage, textiles and ceramics. The works are grouped into nature-related themes introduced by Hearld, who narrates the story behind some of his creations and discusses his influences. He explains his particular love of collage, which he favours for its graphic quality and potential for strong composition. Art historian Simon Martin contributes an essay on Hearld’s place in the English popular-art tradition, and also meets Hearld in his museum-like home to explore the artist’s passion for collecting objects, his working methods and his startling ability to view the wonders of the natural world as if through a child’s eyes.

This book is so wonderful to look at. Very evocative of the British landscape. I absolutely love it.

Love this book. It has page after page of vivid, colourful examples of his work which I never get tired of browsing through. The title ‘work book’ is slightly misleading as it implies that it goes through his working processes, which it doesn’t (at least not in any detail), but I can’t fault it for that as it is altogether a beautiful and inspiring book.

Fabulous, inspirational art book.

OK, the process of printmaking can’t be all that spontaneous but at least the subject matter and finished work looks as though it can be. I saw Mark Hearld’s exhibition at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park and was inspired to come home and get my paints out as the artwork on show there just made you want to have a go. There is no preciousness about Mark’s work, he gets on with it and produces animated colourful pieces depicting animals and birds in the processof going about their daily business. I never did get my own paints out of course, but bought the book instead (at a very good price from Amazon) and can now pore over the pictures all over again. Page sized artwork and close-ups are inspiring and a very useful aide memoir for the exhibition I enjoyed so much.

This book gives you a great insight into Marks way of working, his background, and his own sources of inspiration. A good selection of his work graces the pages, the book is full of information about the various processes he uses, with explanations for those like myself who appreciate the work but are not familiar with the technique. All aspects of printmaking are described – collage, lithograph, linocuts.
This is not a how-to book by any means, but such a beautiful read, wonderful illustrations, and an honest discussion of his work by the man himself. I enjoyed it immensley and will refer back to it over and over again.

It has beautiful artwork. Mine was damaged and Amazon generously refunded and allowed me to keep. The content is limited and not very interesting but the art is lovely and that’s all I wanted, art to inspire my own attempts.
