Love the recipes
by Simon Allchin
This cook book gives great base recipes that are certainly cheap to make. You do feel a bit short changed in the flavour department, which I guess is to be expected so would have been nice if each recipe had suggestions of substitutions and additions you could make to give more of a flavour punch for the times where you can afford to push the boat out a bit. Love the fact it’s mostly based on recipes for one person making it very easy to scale up if you’re cooking for more people or batch cooking for the freezer. Overall, would recommend

I love this book – there are no ridiculously hard to find ingredients, no expensive equipment, and everything you need can be bought from the supermarket. Most recipes have options to include dairy and eggs, or advice about how to make them vegan if you prefer.
He doesn’t price expensive ingredients by the gram, or cut the cost per person by dividing into tiny portions, which are common tactics by other “thrifty” food bloggers. Just sensible, solid recipes that are far more nutritious than some of the other famous money-saving chefs. I’m not a good cook but even I can have a go at some of these.

This was an impulse buy as i thought it would add some inspiration to cheap meals. It did but only in that the recipes are so boring, that I reverted to using my traditional 1970s cooking skills and yellow stickered food. The results were so much better that I might produce my own cookbook!

Purchased this after reading a number of other reviews. We had tried last year when we had more time on our hands during lockdown to cook, etc., to eat a more plant based diet and really enjoyed the difference we felt from doing so. Decided to try it again so looked for cookbooks rather than having to scour the internet for recipes. So glad I bought this book!!! The recipes are so straightforward, simple, and pretty tasty!!! You don’t need lots of fancy ingredients – I’m surprised how tasty some of the meals are considering how few ingredients are involved. We are slowly working our way through the recipes, and so far I cannot fault them. There’s been the odd one that is just ‘okay’ but there’s been many that I would definately repeat making – and it’s all down to individual taste I guess. I’ve never enjoyed aubergines, and this has put them in a new light – especially after one of the dishes I made the other night – one of my favourites so far.
So if you’re new to plant based diets, don’t have a huge amount of time on your hands to faff around with fancy recipes, like to try new meals (ie. not just meat dishes replaced with meat alternatives), then give this book a go, you won’t regret it. It’s already my main go-to book when it’s dinner time!

Not sure each recipe would really come in at £1 or less (don’t know where he buys his halloumi but it’s more than a quid per portion alone around here) but this is a really good recipe book. I’m not vegetarian but wanted more variety in my meals, and to reduce the environmental impact of my life a bit, and perceived veggie cooking as a bit labour-intensive and difficult. So this is a great answer to those things.
This book has really simple, easy-to-follow recipes and everything is super-tasty. A stand-out so far is the Yaki Soba, which tastes JUST like the Wagamama original. Also great – the halloumi saag, and I enjoyed the Jollof Rice (purists might object to its authenticity but it’s really good, nonetheless). Definitely worth the money and my current go-to cookbook.

A good book to use when the food budget is a bit tight. Informative with lots of tasty, easy recipes.

I’m slow on the uptake with this series of books. However I bought this one second hand on here, and am surprised how much I’ve used it already.
I like that there is such a short list of ingredients and instructions in the recipes- although I’m a compitent cook sometimes I can’t face a complicated recipe.
I agree with some other reviewers that some recipes tend to be side dishes rather than main, but that’s nothing some rice, potato or garlic bread won’t solve.
