Medical Services in the First World War (Shire Library)
£7.60£8.50 (-11%)
The number of wounded in the First World War was unprecedented, and inadequate military planning presented the medical and voluntary community with huge and daunting challenges. Yet in the face of tremendous adversity both tackled their work with resourcefulness, courage and great humanity. This book is the illustrated story of those who risked their lives collecting casualties from the front line, of the various transport and treatment facilities at their disposal and of the eclectic mix of buildings in which the wounded were cared for at home, including many famous country houses. The vital part played by nurses, both in terms of essential medical duties and in boosting morale among the patients, is also examined, rounding off this perfect introduction to medical care in the First World War.

A good introduction to the variety of services formed at this time but no real help in my research of the Middle East campaign.

I’ve only flicked over the pages so far, but looks very interesting.
If you like the subject and history of the great war, this will be an interesting read I’m sure.
Always like to study the photos to get an idea of life at that time and try to connect with the service people of the time

Concise pictorial evidence of a Service to Humanity during a period of inhumanity

If you’re teaching or studying the new edexcel gcse (9-1) history medicine unit, this book is a great read for the section on trench medicine. Full of detail on each facet of treatment soldiers received. Detail is much greater than the section in the Edexcel textbook. Great for teachers, I’m going to recommend it to my students who are targeted highest grades. Supports battlefields trip too.
