Mental Arithmetic Book 1: KS2 Maths, Year 3, Ages 7-8
£4.70
Online answers as well as a selection of free supporting downloads are available from the Schofield & Sims website.
Mental Arithmetic provides rich and varied practice to develop pupils’ essential maths skills and prepare them for all aspects of the Key Stage 2 national tests. It may also be used as preparation for the 11+, and with older students for consolidation and recovery.
Structured according to ability rather than age, the series allows children to work at their own pace, building confidence and fluency. Two Entry Tests are available in the Mental Arithmetic Teacher’s Guide to help teachers, parents and tutors to select the appropriate book for each child.
Mental Arithmetic 1 covers the key subject areas of number, measurement, geometry and statistics, including place value, simple fractions, time tables, telling the time, giving change, and 2-D and 3-D shapes. The book includes:
- 36 one-page tests, each presented in a unique three-part format comprising: questions where use of language is kept to a minimum; questions using number vocabulary; questions focusing on one- and two-step word problems.
- Progress Tests to monitor learning as pupils work through the book
- Check-up Tests to identify any gaps in understanding.
A separate accompanying answer book, Mental Arithmetic 1 Answers (ISBN 9780721708058), contains correct answers to all the questions, making marking quick and easy.

I was recommended these books to practice as my kid wants to appear for 11+ exams. The books cover an extensive topic and has some really good Maths questions for kids to solve. Even if you don’t wish to appear for 11+ these books are still helpful to improve your mental arithmetic skills and improve you speed. The quality of the papers is good and there are ample number of questions to practice. There is a provision alongside the questions to write your answers and also an achievement chart at the end of the book to track your progress. Books are reasonably priced and cover all the levels from introductory to Level 6.
Only downside which really annoys me is that it does not come with answers. You have to buy the answer book separately. I really hope they publish the answers in the same book as the questions.

Absolutely like this book. It would have been good if it came with answer sheet though as it’ll make marking it really quick and easy for parents.

I bought this to help my son improve his mental arithmetic. It starts out fairly easily and gradually gets harder. We have only tried one page so far but my son enjoyed filling it in. It has mixed problems on each page in the form of a test per page. After 10 tests there is a progress test. With 3 sections and 4 progress tests throughout the book. There is alot if content for the money so good value.

Buy them for my boys for practice, and it does great work. For my boys it is very helpful, practice it and correct it, then know it.

I have been using this book with my just turned 6 year old, and it is great at posing questions in a way which really requires a child to think about what is being asked of them, rather than basic addition, subtraction etc. It teaches them to extrapolate from the question only the key information, rather than to get bogged down in the words. My daughter finds some questions challenging, but she is only in Year 1, so to be expected. I will be purchasing another copy for my 4 year old son as I think it’s fantastic.
