Mental Arithmetic Book 3: KS2 Maths, Years 4-5, Ages 8-10
£4.70
Online answers as well as a selection of free supporting downloads are available from the Schofield & Sims website.
Mental Arithmetic provides rich and varied practice to develop pupils’ essential maths skills and prepare them for all aspects of the Key Stage 2 national tests. It may also be used as preparation for the 11+, and with older students for consolidation and recovery.
Structured according to ability rather than age, the series allows children to work at their own pace, building confidence and fluency. Two Entry Tests are available in the Mental Arithmetic Teacher’s Guide to help teachers, parents and tutors to select the appropriate book for each child.
Mental Arithmetic 3 covers the key subject areas of number, measurement, geometry and statistics, including negative numbers, Roman numerals, decimals, equivalent fractions, time tables, digital and analogue clocks, problem solving and classifying shapes. The book includes:
- 36 one-page tests, each presented in a unique three-part format comprising: questions where use of language is kept to a minimum; questions using number vocabulary; questions focusing on one- and two-step word problems.
- Progress Tests to monitor learning as pupils work through the book
- Check-up Tests to identify any gaps in understanding.
A separate accompanying answer book, Mental Arithmetic 3 Answers (ISBN 9780721708072), contains correct answers to all the questions, making marking quick and easy.

These books are great but this copy came with creased printing so you can’t read the question and some of the printing is readable but a little blury.

My son is preping for 11+ and these books are perfect – great range of topics. Gave it 4 starts because there are no answers and I have to buy them separately.

I was recommended these books to practice as my kid wants to appear for 11+ exams. The books cover an extensive topic and has some really good Maths questions for kids to solve. Even if you don’t wish to appear for 11+ these books are still helpful to improve your mental arithmetic skills and improve you speed. The quality of the papers is good and there are ample number of questions to practice. There is a provision alongside the questions to write your answers and also an achievement chart at the end of the book to track your progress. Books are reasonably priced and cover all the levels from introductory to Level 6.
Only downside which really annoys me is that it does not come with answers. You have to buy the answer book separately. I really hope they publish the answers in the same book as the questions.
