Mental Arithmetic Book 5: KS2 Maths, Year 6, Ages 10-11
£4.70
Online answers as well as a selection of free supporting downloads are available from the Schofield & Sims website.
Mental Arithmetic provides rich and varied practice to develop pupils’ essential maths skills and prepare them for all aspects of the Key Stage 2 national tests. It may also be used as preparation for the 11+, and with older students for consolidation and recovery.
Structured according to ability rather than age, the series allows children to work at their own pace, building confidence and fluency. Two Entry Tests are available in the Mental Arithmetic Teacher’s Guide to help teachers, parents and tutors to select the appropriate book for each child.
Mental Arithmetic 5 covers the key subject areas of number, measurement, geometry, statistics, ratio and proportion, and algebra. The book includes:
- 36 one-page tests, each presented in a unique three-part format comprising: questions where use of language is kept to a minimum; questions using number vocabulary; questions focusing on one- and two-step word problems.
- Progress Tests to monitor learning as pupils work through the book
- Check-up Tests to identify any gaps in understanding.
A separate accompanying answer book, Mental Arithmetic 5 Answers (ISBN 9780721708096), contains correct answers to all the questions, making marking quick and easy.

Its a great book for my daughter. It covers what is usually needed for the 11+. It has basic arithmetic questions which have definitely improved my daughter’s maths skills.

I was recommended these books to practice as my kid wants to appear for 11+ exams. The books cover an extensive topic and has some really good Maths questions for kids to solve. Even if you don’t wish to appear for 11+ these books are still helpful to improve your mental arithmetic skills and improve you speed. The quality of the papers is good and there are ample number of questions to practice. There is a provision alongside the questions to write your answers and also an achievement chart at the end of the book to track your progress. Books are reasonably priced and cover all the levels from introductory to Level 6.
Only downside which really annoys me is that it does not come with answers. You have to buy the answer book separately. I really hope they publish the answers in the same book as the questions.

I didn’t realise the answers are not in the back of the book. Turns out the a answer book is more expensive then the question book!

Very challenging book and great it has small sections so 10 year old can just do a section at time and doesn’t feel too much. You have to buy the answer booklet separately and you will need it!

These are very good
Our son is preparing for 11+ entrance exams in Sep 2021. His tutor recommended this we have started with book 3 and book 4 and now on book 5
These are good books if you follow them properly and let your child do 36 questions of each excercise in 30 min
Just few tips
Do not help your child while doing the test and don’t sit next to your child while he/she is doing the test once test is completed try to go over answers immediately and let you child reattempt wrong answers
Revise same book until your child is consistently getting over 95% in every test and then move to next book depending on child age if you child is in start of year 5 then start with book 3 and then move to higher level books
One book should be completed in 30 days and then 30 days to revise
Good luck
