Online answers as well as a selection of free supporting downloads are available from the Schofield & Sims website.

Mental Arithmetic provides rich and varied practice to develop pupils’ essential maths skills and prepare them for all aspects of the Key Stage 2 national tests. It may also be used as preparation for the 11+, and with older students for consolidation and recovery.

Structured according to ability rather than age, the series allows children to work at their own pace, building confidence and fluency. Two Entry Tests are available in the Mental Arithmetic Teacher’s Guide to help teachers, parents and tutors to select the appropriate book for each child.

The Mental Arithmetic Introductory Book acts as a bridge from Key Stage 1, covering all four number operations, as well as, sequences and simple money problems. It includes:

  • 36 one-page tests, each presented in a unique three-part format comprising: questions using pictures to develop basic maths skills, questions using symbols and patterns, questions using simple and consistent language.
  • Achievement Charts to monitor progress as pupils work through the book.
  • Just Facts questions to provide additional practice of key maths facts.

A separate accompanying answer book, Mental Arithmetic Introductory Book Answers (ISBN 9780721708539), contains correct answers to all the questions, making marking quick and easy.

I used to use these for revision of basic skills with my Y3 class and just bought one for my daughter to practise over the summer (end Y2) as I like them so much. This one mainly covers basic addition and subtraction, but what I particularly like about them is that they also include simple problems such as 5 + ? = 8 and also the different language of mathematics, such as “What is the difference between 4 and 2?” I know these sound very easy but they can throw many children. They’re not super exciting and include a lot of “count the dots” ones but they are excellent for building up speed and reinforcing mental maths skills and do gradually get more challenging as you work on up through the book. (The later ones in the series get harder and harder too and go on to also practise x tables and other topics too.) They’re also broken up into small sections on each page so not too daunting for a child to face – you could even reward for completing each part to help motivate!

I’d recommend this particular one for reinforcement for Y2 or 3, or for able younger children, or to support an older child struggling with their number skills and needing a fairly straightforward refresher course. Easier than trying to dig around for sheets on the net – but I’d also use this in combination with some fun online games and perhaps some trickier puzzles too depending on your child’s ability.

One more thing – the answer book is available separately but for a much higher price. I personally wouldn’t bother as at this level you can save the money by just working them out yourself!

Great book for lots of easy math exercises. Not sure it’s for year 2-3. More like year 1.

Great for my kids aged 5-7 yrs. Only annoying thing is that the answers are not included and must be purchased seperatley

I was recommended these books to practice as my kid wants to appear for 11+ exams. The books cover an extensive topic and has some really good Maths questions for kids to solve. Even if you don’t wish to appear for 11+ these books are still helpful to improve your mental arithmetic skills and improve you speed. The quality of the papers is good and there are ample number of questions to practice. There is a provision alongside the questions to write your answers and also an achievement chart at the end of the book to track your progress. Books are reasonably priced and cover all the levels from introductory to Level 6.

Only downside which really annoys me is that it does not come with answers. You have to buy the answer book separately. I really hope they publish the answers in the same book as the questions.

Well set out and good length. Year 2 son (maths strongest subject) finds them easy but still makes the odd mistake so is the right level. Questions asked in lots of different ways.

I bought this for my end Y1 child. It’s easy in the beginning for her but she gets lots of careless mistakes so it’s worth doing to teach discipline in checking etc.

Would be useful to get an indication of how long each test should be. I give her 10 mins but initially she could do 2 tests in that time but now needs 10 mins for each test and we are half way through the book. Presumably she will need longer as we progress.

    Annoying to not have answers!!
