Finally! There is A Mental Toughness Book For Young Athletes!

Moses and Troy Horne here. Your mental toughness guides! If you are reading this you probably have a young athlete who struggles with in-game stress and maybe even sports performance anxiety. That is why this version was mostly written by Moses. As of the time of the writing of this book Moses Horne is a 15-year-old elite athlete who can talk directly about the triumphs and struggles of working towards being mentally tough. This is the only book that I know of with input from an actual young athlete.

My name is Troy Horne. I’m his dad. I am here to help the parents understand how to help their kiddos navigate this mental toughness journey. For more on that make sure that you pick up the Parent’s guide version of this book – Mental Toughness for Young Athletes: Eight Proven 5-Minute Mindset Exercises For Kids And Teens In Competitive Sports (Parent’s Guide) It’s super necessary. We know where you are and we know how to help you help your young athlete find their mental fortitude. We have purchased a lot of books about mental toughness in sports.

Most of the books that we read were not a good fit for young athletes because they were either written for adults or not written for youth athletes in COMPETITIVE sports. There is a difference.

Since there wasn’t anything out there for elite athletes I did what every youth sports parent does when they want to help their kid. I started my own team! JUUUUST KIDDING! (I probably should have, but I didn’t believe that I would be able to do it well. I lacked mental confidence myself I guess. We talk about that in the parent’s version of this book too.)

We took the long journey of ups and downs. We struggled to help our young athlete find his mental toughness. IT WAS ROUGH! Luckily along the way, we found the winning formula thanks to being able to talk with sports icons personally.

We launched a podcast together called Hoopchalk Basketball Podcast and on it, we interviewed sports MENTAL TOUGHNESS GIANTS like…

  • Chauncey Billups
  • Tywanna Smith
  • Keiko Yoshimine
  • Earl Boykins
  • Jason Richardson and
  • Kobe Bryant!

We studied what they did and said based on our interviews and we came up with a mental toughness plan that worked! We wrote down what worked for our young athlete and we put it in this book so that you would be able to skip a lot of the struggle and failure part. No need for everyone to struggle right?

In this book, we are going to share with you what we learned from talking to NBA Athletes, NFL Athletes, EuroLeague Athletes, College Coaches, and College Athletes as well.

  • Does your child perform better in practice than they do when the game or when the “Lights Come On”?
  • Do they seem like they are losing their love for the game?
  • Do you want to help them?

If you answered yes to these questions then you are in the right place. This book is the answer that you have been looking for! I can say this with confidence because I have used everything that I am going to share with you in this book with my son and it has worked.

What a blessing to get the keys to mental toughness straight from greats! I look forward to sharing what we learned with you!

This stuff is a game-changer and it’s made specifically for young athletes!

Works very well as written by a youngster from first hand experience, not theory, for youngsters!

Overall, I thought Mental Toughness For Young Athletes was an okay book. The principles are sound and the exercises are easy to follow. However, I found the book to be a bit too American-centric. The author uses a lot of American sports examples, which can be a bit alienating for readers from other countries. Additionally, the editing in the book is poor. There are a number of typos and grammatical errors, which can make it difficult to read at times.

Despite these flaws, I think Mental Toughness For Young Athletes could be a helpful resource for young athletes who are looking to improve their mental toughness. The principles are sound and the exercises are easy to follow. If you can overlook the American-centric focus and the poor editing, I think this book will be a helpful resource.

Here are some of the pros and cons of the book:

    Pros:

    The principles are sound.
The exercises are easy to follow.
My daughter liked it, and we read it aloud together.

    Cons:

The book is a bit too American-centric.
    The editing is poor.
    Sometimes it’s hard to follow.

Overall, I would give this book a 4 out of 5 stars. It’s not a perfect book, but it could be a helpful resource for young athletes who are looking to improve their mental toughness.

I bought this for my son who’s recently been accepted into a basketball academy and is having to step out of his comfort zone. I like that it’s written from the child/teen point of view and it’s not just an adult giving advice. Very well written and easy to read. Thanks for your valuable insights. Totally recommend

So, my daughter decides to take up Football (Soccer) having had no interest until nearly 8 years old, when suddenly the bug takes hold following a school trial session and a suggestion from a friend to give it a go.

Fast forward nearly three years and she has made fantastic progress in a very short time with a recent invite for an academy trial with the biggest local team!

Now the road to this point has been bumpy and props to my daughter for showing the courage to continue despite them but, one thing that did significantly help her (and myself as ‘Dad coach’), was this little gem of a book I stumbled upon whilst considering how to help her become more focused and able to understand that sport comes with it’s bumps and bruises and it’s ok to be competitive and ‘give it back’ as it were (within the rules) as sport is a different thing than our day to day manner, something I noticed many similar age struggle with.

We read through the book together one chapter at a time and then I would sit back and let the ideas marinate only to stand back in awe to see her apply the very ideas and have a new level of determination show through in the very next game! So much so, her coaches were taken aback too and it made for a new central position in the team with her new found battling instinct to pair with her already formidable athleticism and rapidly improving skills and tactical understanding.

Regardless of the sport your little one has chosen, the path will have many similarities given it’s ‘the mind the drives the thing’, so consider purchasing this very reasonably priced and highly accessible little book for them to read and watch how it influences them to show their best selves too!

written very much from an American sports perspective which my son found off putting. He never really got into it, which was a shame.
