Herbie and Violet’s fifth gripping adventure brings the internationally bestselling Eerie-on-Sea series to a heart-stopping climax.
It is midwinter once again, and the hosts of a paranormal podcast have descended on Eerie-on-Sea eager for a sighting of the legendary malamander. Herbert Lemon, Lost-and-Founder at the Grand Nautilus Hotel, is feeling uneasy – and not just because of the visitors. He’s being plagued by unsettling dreams, and the head-splitting “Eerie Hum” that is reverberating through the town.
Something is dreadfully wrong, and it seems to be coming from Eerie’s very core. Herbie and his friend Violet Parma will need all their courage as they head deep below the town to seek answers. Perhaps here, finally, they – and the malamander too – will discover the Deepest Secret of Eerie-on-Sea.

My daughter has been reading the Eerie on Sea books since Malamander came out. The into of which is enough to ensnare anyone (large or small). But I loved the books so much that I must confess I’ve been reading them too and couldn’t wait for Mermadusa to be released. Can’t wait for the next instalment.

After following Herbie and Violet’s journey for a few years now, I was afraid to read the final book. Firstly, because it meant that their glorious adventures were coming to an end, but secondly, I was worried that I wasn’t going to find out the answers I’ve been asking myself from the beginning. With regards to the latter, Mermedusa gave me everything I needed. With regards to the former, the ending was indeed very bittersweet, and a piece of my heart will always remain in Eerie-on-Sea.
Mermedusa brings all of the stories and characters and questions from the previous books, and takes them on a thrilling last ride. I could not put this book down. Very few books or book series are so detailed in their descriptions and have characters so full, that the books play out like films in your head. The Eerie-on-sea books, starting with Malamander and ending with this wonderful conclusion, have always done that for me.
Huge congratulations to Thomas Taylor on such a wonderful book series, that I know will enthral and captivate generations of readers to come.

The Eerie-on-Sea series is a well-written, slightly fantastical, slightly spooky set of adventures that pulls in the reader with eccentricities, oddities and excitement. Always full of action, this fifth and final book is a captivating read, well-told and always mysterious.
Told in the present tense, giving the story immediacy, this is an immersive adventure from the excellent descriptive nature of the writing, playing to the senses, and heightening adrenaline, so that the reader definitely feels like they too are in Eerie. I love the use of names and word play throughout, and the characters, who are not only lovable (Herbie and Violet) but display friendship in all its guises.
Somewhat predictable for a jaded old-timer like me, and with a villain that is too villainy all round, but minor quibbles in a super little series that revels in its theme, sings from the page with its world building, and strikes at good old children’s adventure story.
I was enamoured with the ending, which answers some questions, and perfectly rounds up this warm and humorous if slightly eerie series!
With thanks to Walker Books for providing a sample reading copy.

I can’t believe I’m saying goodbye to Eerie-on-Sea, but what a goodbye it is! All our favourite people and places; reminiscences of past adventures; and of course adventure a new await in the pages of Mermedusa. I thought the book tied up all the unanswered mysteries from the previous book, showcased Herbie’s and Vi’s friendship perfectly, and kept the suspense going until the very end. Eerie-on-Sea will forever have a special place in my heart and I know that readers are going to be enjoying this series for years to come. Thank you Thomas for the perfect blend of adventure, magic and mystery that you’ve given us! I do hope you’ve got something new and exciting waiting for us!

Another terrific adventure for Herbie and Vi, tying up all the loose ends from the previous four books in a satisfying way. The characters are great, the setting excellent and the pace allows you to race through each chapter desperate for just one more… Highly recommended

A 5 star ending to this incredible series. Herbie and Violet have felt like family for the past few years and I will miss them dreadfully. Thomas Taylor has created a series of boks to read over and over again. Just brilliant.

This adventure brings together all the previous mysteries and creatures. A very satisfying ending, but kind of sad that was the last book with Herbie and Violet.

Although I have a preordered copy of Mermedusa by Thomas Taylor – author/illustrator on order from the booknook. I couldn’t resist downloading the kindle copy. I have just finished it and it’s great to have a conclusion, but I can’t help but feel sad that my adventures with Eerie on Sea have come to an end with Herbie and Vi’s. All good things come to an end I guess!
But I can’t wait to introduce the Malamander to more children as they come through the school and share the tales of Eerie on sea with them. And of course I can alway pop back and revisit the previous adventures.
Thank you Mr Taylor for a great series of books!
If you teach in upper key stage two, read these books to your class, so a while topic on Malamander – there is so much you can do with this story.
