I’ve known Matt Hatch for many years now, and I’m delighted that he’s written this important book about Christian discipleship. What I appreciate most about him is that he lives what he teaches and everything he writes comes from his experience. Metamorphosis is not a book for the faint of heart, or for those who want to live comfortably. It is just the right balance of vulnerability and challenge, and of inspiration and practicality. In my own life, spiritual and personal growth has been my constant hope, and I appreciate how Matt is honest about how hard it can be to hold onto this without growing disillusioned, and yet still holds firmly to the priority of growth in all areas of our lives.
After starting with key foundations and attitudes of Christian discipleship in Part One, including the hallmarks of surrender, encounter, and obedience, Part Two unveils a unique framework for how personal transformation actually happens in the believer’s life. This is the highlight of the book and is a memorable set of ways to conceptualise this vital lifelong process, including story-based tools and the change circle. Part Three then walks through crucial discipleship rhythms and practices, following a classic up, in, out pattern. Throughout there are practical suggestions and relatable personal stories, along with helpful questions for reflection at the end of each chapter. It is not always feel-good or comfortable reading, because seeks to take its readers beyond their comfort zone into authentic spiritual formation, but it is joyful and hopeful throughout. If your desire is to walk more deeply with Jesus, be radically transformed in his presence, and live a fruitful missional life that impacts others, then this is the book for you.

Loved this book. He has a real talent for asking challenging questions (at the end of each chapter) that helped me process the excellent content on a really personal level. It took me much longer to read than I expected – for all the best reasons! It’s clearly written by someone with a love for discipling others and seeing them walk into greater freedom through faith. He’s vulnerable about his own journey which leaves you with a real sense of being ‘in this together’ rather than an expert pointing out all the places you’re going wrong, and there is such warm, deep wisdom to help you get unstuck and move forward. This book is an incredible tool that has left me more deeply in love with Jesus than it found me and I know I’ll be dibbing back into the chapters frequently. If you’re up for a read that’s a bit like a wise, kind friend who’ll challenge your heart and motivate you (and give you the odd chuckle along the way to keep you moving!), one that the Holy Spirit will use to both prod and encourage you through, then buy this book!

Full disclosure: I know Matt Hatch and what he’s built up over many years in Christian ministry, and I was given this book for free in the hopes I would write a review.
Well, I am glad to give a review. This book is so readable. I already had great respect for Matt, but that has now sky-rocketed. This is a truly useful book that I will be recommending to people in our church.
I mostly only read academic books and, by contrast, I often find more devotional or practical books about the Christian life are long-winded and have little to say. NOT SO with Metamorphosis. Matt writes with clarity, humility and ability. The book is peppered with anecdotes about his own walk with Jesus, warts and all. It is the fruit of Matt’s lived experience and also his wide reading across relevant authors – many of which I had also read. The book brings together many insights into a well-structured order. The practices and rhythms Matt describes are not just theories. Matt has pastored using these insights for years.
I’ve also tried to practice mentoring and coaching others over my lifetime. This is the first book I have read that has brought together something akin to my own learning about how to set about following Jesus yourself, and helping others to walk with you in that path. It’s to do with the formation of human beings as God intended.
Highly recommended.

About fifteen years ago I heard Matt Hatch speak on discipleship at a church leader conference in Brighton. I was so struck by what he was teaching that I had to ask if I could have some time alone with him to dig deeper. Another of our elders joined me later that week for an hour of pure gold as Matt kindly answered our questions and shared from his hard-won experience of pursuing personal transformation and making disciples in the local church.
Little did I know that several years later my wife and I would be moving to Leeds to join Mosaic Church, attracted in part by this ongoing commitment to discipleship. I have since found Matt to be consistently transparent about how Jesus is working in his own life (as you’ll discover in the book) and always focused on heart change in his preaching, discipleship groups and one-to-one counselling.
In Metamorphosis Matt has given us such a rich resource, the fruit of many years of pursuing Christ-like maturity for himself and those he serves. I have already had the privilege of viewing some early drafts, and yet I have found fresh challenges for myself in reading the finished work. Metamorphosis is a book to read prayerfully, allowing God to speak into your life about his gracious intention to make you more and more like his Son and to use you to do the same for others.
