Since the first edition was published in 1980, Metric Pattern Cutting for Menswear has become established as the standard work on this subject and has proved invaluable as both a textbook for students and a reference source for the practising designer.

In this fifth edition, the chapter on computer aided design now has full colour illustrations and reflects the growing importance of CAD to the industry and as a part of fashion and design courses. The rest of the book has been updated where necessary: in particular, new blocks for tailored shirts, new details on how to adapt men’s blocks for women’s wear, and a revision of sizing and labelling information. Colour is now used to differentiate the main groups of patterns and with its tried and tested layout with clear text and diagrams, Metric Pattern Cutting for Menswear is an essential purchase for students of fashion and design.

Love this book – it’s so hard to get hold of menswear patterns, and I have all I need here. There’s enough detail for me to work back easily into historical patterns too. Only issue is suddenly everyone wants a new coat!

Bought as present. Great illustrations, instructions are easy to follow, patterns modern and contemporary. A great resource.

After spending my time getting my BA in Fashion design i found that i was unable to create patterns only deform them, it presents the the lack of care at Uni. So spent the money to buy this book to help me along it is a bit hard to follow but something that before long will get the hang of. It’s a fantastic teacher and allows you to take more control of creating patterns. It’s a book worth having as it allows you the understanding of creating a pattern therefore not having to be dependent on buying overpriced pattern pieces that will more then likely be a bad fit.

Really handy book for drafting menswear. Occasional typing errors, which could affect your drafting if you aren’t paying attention. But any errors are fairly obvious. There is also a lot of ease in the patterns, so I tend to draft a size or two smaller than I need .

Excellent book with many useful and consistent formulas, would recommend it to total beginner though as it might be frustrating in regards to properly drafting the patterns etc. It most definitely elevated my sewing skill in terms of garment construction to a very good level.

As yet not made pattern from this but it appears to be quite thorough and well thought out. I am hoping this will help make my own patterns but along side commercial ones I have this may enable me to get better fitting. I hope it will prove to be as helpful as I think.

This really is the only book available for MENSWEAR cutting, so really there is no choice. I advise caution because as I work through the book, it seems that some vital information, particularly for beginners, is missing. However, I believe that the menswear pattern cutting is supposed to be worked on AFTER someone has studied and worked from the WOMENSWEAR volume by the same author. Basic things like truing up a seamline to match and ease added to patterns are not covered in this book and this could lead someone to spend fruitless hours working out why the block patterns do not match. Also, the blocks are drafted with seam allowances on them which is very confusing and yet the diagrams are not clear as to where on the blocks the seam allowances have been included or not. I don’t think there are mistakes as such in the book, it’s just that it doesn’t explain things very well from the beginning and expects you to have a very good understanding of pattern cutting before you even start.
