A very different Rebus story that was enjoyable but the number of characters became confusing. Nicely wrapped up at the end.

I found Rebus so absent in this he seemed more like a memory in the minds of the other characters, as if he were already dead. I have all the Rebus novels and read this in sequence after the others, as l l finished each book the growing disaffection of the author with the character became obvious. I have no doubt Rebus will meet his demise in the next and what will be the final book of the series. So for me this was a well written story as always, but it made me sad to see the depressing effect of ill health and the ageing process on a once vital personality and l doubt l will buy the next book. l will not be prepared to say goodbye to an old friend.

One of the best in a very long series, this being the 25th in almost 40 years. Over time Ian Rankin has managed the change in circumstances of his creation well: different crimes, different criminals, different policing, different Scotland – same Rebus? 2024 finds him in poor health, nearing 70 and in prison. I got lost in this book.

The plots intertwine, a tweak and a coincidence to nudge them along but nothing implausible. The characters, most well-known now, interact and play out their parts convincingly. What makes Rankin such a good writer is that the characters tell the story themselves, his command of dialogue is unsurpassed. His novels are driven by communication. You see this world, can see this world only through the eyes of Rebus, Clarke, Fox. He also has an eye for the incidental: a minor character is the prison librarian who reveals herself in a flush of excitement when a violent altercation sends the books flying and her heart panting. I expect more from Meghan Keighley.

The ending is as always with Rebus a beginning. For how much longer?

Another genius novel! Regis keeps getting better and better. The setting and characters of this one are beautifully drawn. Rankin beats other writers in most genres hands down. A triumph.

Classic rebus. Well written and well played. A difficult read but well worth the plot, the twists, the writing. The characters are well established but also multifaceted and complicated. Always a satisfactory / excellent read.

I had almost given up on Ian Rankin after what I found to be very mediocre novels over the past few years, especially the Rebus book that preceded this one. But I’m very glad I stuck with him because this definitely one of the best in the whole series. Vintage Rankin/Rebus and excellent characterisation.

I just enjoy reading the John Rebus books and this one was so much like the rest – gripping and interesting with good characters. Never a dull moment and great intrigue. Highly recommend.

This is Ian Rankin’s 25th book. Rebus is in prison in Edinburgh and this has a different angle for him to solve who murdered a prisoner in the next cell to him and were the prison guards involved as the cell was locked?
Meanwhile the Cid squad are investigating a school girl gone missing and a young man found in a pool of blood in his kitchen. Siobhan does go to visit Rebus in jail to add spice to both story lines.
Ian Rankin has written many Rebus books and I have read most. They are all good.
The style is easy to follow and this book starts slove to develop into an exciting read. I will read more of this author.

Excellent book really enjoyed it. Left on a cliffhanger just like the previous book. Can’t wait for the next one!

I was an absolute joy to read this and so glad that rebus is still going strong. There are so many twist and turns in rankins books but he delivers it with such passion that you can never guess first hand who did it. I’ve read all of rankins book and have enjoyed trying to solve the cases over the years with rebus,Christine and the team. Makes you wonder if you would have made a good detective. Rankin writes as you would expect them to talk so you feel that the characters are down to earth, definitely not posh but he also writes as if you are right the there beside them walking each step together. I highly recommend anyone to read ian rankins books and you won’t regret it.

Clever plot(s) all interconnected with some sympathetic characters and excellent banter. Very impressive and recommended.

Five more words required – yes others get away with far less. Why??????
