My introduction to Miles Morales was the Into The Spider-Verse movie, but this graphic novel does a very good job of quickly bringing the reader up to speed on the relationship between Peter Parker Spider-Man and Miles Morales Spider-Man as well as the latter’s origin and powers. I still find it slightly confusing that they are both just called Spider-Man but that’s down to Marvel rather than the authors of this book, and in any case the focus is very firmly on Miles Morales (though Peter Parker does briefly appear).
The story for the most part is nice and pacy, with a socially responsible theme as is typical of Marvel these days. It doesn’t feel shoehorned in though, and there’s still plenty of action and humour as Miles tries to find the balance between his home and superhero responsibilities. I found it an enjoyable and easy read. The novel is aimed at middle-grade readers so, as an older reader, some of the teenage slang (e.g. “That was clutch”) wasn’t familiar to me but I’m sure it will be to teenagers!
The art style is bright and colourful, the frames often feel like stills from an animated series, though not quite the same style as Into the Spider-Verse. Of course, it helps greatly that Spider-Man is such an iconic character, it’s not too difficult to make him look good and Pablo Leon’s illustrations do that admirably.
I enjoyed this book a lot more than I was expecting to, it serves as a great introduction to Miles Morales whether you’ve seen the Into the Spider-Verse movie or not. There’s also a sneek peek at a Ms Marvel story (Stretched Thin) at the end, which looks interesting.

I bought this one for my brother who is obsessed with Miles Morales and decided to give it a read before I gave it to him.
I’ll start with the good. The art was super cute and every page of this comic looked great. I liked the message and the characterization of Miles and co.
Unfortunately I felt like the storytelling was a bit all over the place. I regularly had to pause to try to figure out what had just happened as it wasn’t communicated clearly. I believe Reynolds is primarily a novelist with not much experience writing comics and I’m afraid to say it shows.
Hopefully my brother will enjoy this one more than I did but I’m afraid to say I probably wouldn’t recommend this comic.
