Mind’s Eye (Nick Hall Book 1)

£5.00

Nick Hall awakens with powerful implants in his brain and assassins on his tail. And the future of humanity depends on his survival.

Now the subject of an upcoming movie franchise! (Variety, 11/17/21).

A riveting sci-fi thriller from the NY Times bestselling author whose books have sold almost three million copies.

When Nick Hall awakens in a dumpster, bloodied and without a memory, he can’t imagine how things could get worse. But that’s before multiple assassins promptly start trying to kill him. Hall soon discovers that advanced electronics have been implanted in his brain, and he now has two astonishing abilities–he can surf the web using thoughts alone, and he can read minds.

But who inserted the implants? And why? And why is someone so desperate to kill him?

As Hall races to find answers, he comes to learn that far more is at stake than just his life. Because his actions can either catapult civilization to new heights–or bring about its total collapse.

Based on actual research on neural implants and thought-controlled web surfing (and foreshadowing the emergence of brain implant companies such as Elon Musk’s Neuralink), Mind’s Eye is a smart, roller-coaster ride of a thriller. One that raises a number of intriguing, and sometimes chilling, possibilities about a future that is just around the corner.

I really enjoyed this book twas well thought out and ticked along nicely. Maybe could do with a bit more descriptive prose to bring characters, places into the minds eye of the reader. Also lacking in places is the unpredictably that unleashing violent events can bring. I would say a little bit formulaic and could alienate some readers for being a little bit too clever. Nevertheless, l enjoyed the journey Douglas created, well done.

Douglas E Richards has produced another excellent techno thriller in Mind’s Eye.
Nick Hall awakes with no memory of who he is or how he came to be hunted by professional killers.
He finds he has the ability to mentally surf the internet and can also read people’s thoughts.
There follows a frantic adventure as Nick tries to answer these questions whilst staying alive!
As well as the thrilling nature of the novel, Richards cleverly explores the ethics, morality and consequences of having such abilities.
With only five typos in the entire 350pp plus novel, a minor miracle in today’s publishing world, it’s a fast-paced, gripping read. Highly recommended.

Just about scrapes three stars. Pity. Started well. Nick Hall wakes up in a dumpster, with no memory but the ability to read minds. Oh, and he can access the Internet just using his brain. So a great premise. The first half continued to be pretty good as Nick works out how to handle his new powers and meets a girl with whom he can communicate telepathically. Alas the second half got sillier and sillier. Far too many unbelievable characters introduced. Do we have to read about yet another arch villain who’s a hugely wealthy psychopath?

The author spends an awful lot of time and effort explaining the workings of the increasingly unlikely plot, which gets pretty tiresome.

I don’t often give 5 stars, there aren’t too many Joseph Conrads out there.

    But this is was excellent.

Great premise, good characterisation, and wonderful twists.

The pace was quick, but not breakneck, I sometimes find the pace of thrillers so fast that I can’t help wondering if its a ploy to hide other shortcomings.

For the most part I found this book to be an intriguing and interesting story. However, I nearly put it down several times without finishing it. The long narratives and back story peppered throughout the story was somewhat boring. I am glad I stuck it out as the last quarter of the book made it worth the read. The twists and turns in the plot was predictable, but still effective. I found the dialogue between the main characters a little over done and, in some cases, not very realistic. The technical expertise of the author is apparent throughout the book, but this also could be the reason for some the boring and, in my opinion, unnecessary long narratives. I sometimes felt like I was reading a graduate thesis rather than a thriller novel. The action scenes are well developed and effectively written (the seldom seen action scenes actually saved this book.). As the author of a thriller novel of my own, I read this genre hoping to pick up tips an ideas for my own work. I didn’t find any I could use in this book. However, the theme is very compelling and up to date. While I don’t believe (I could be wrong) that any of this technology is going to seen inside of the next 50 years, it does get your attention. For those who enjoy science fiction with current topics, I can recommend this book for a decent read. But for me it didn’t work enough to make me want to explore other books in this series by this author.

I read a huge amount of sci fi and would put this among my top reads. Whilst it is about a technological advance, the technology isn’t the focus of the story it is more about the character development and human consequences of the advance. The plot twist was unexpected and the resolution was imaginative.

It is also nice to read about an author who is so clearly enthused by his work and so grateful for his success. The Wired series was excellent and a tough act to follow but this book really delivered. Doug, if you keep writing them like this I have no doubt you’ll be a multiple lottery winner.

I found this an interesting sci-fi style thriller – but it was hard going – mainly because of the writing style. I don’t want to give spoilers – but the ESP ability of the main character, whilst crucial to a lot of the story and fairly well worked in, just stretched things too far for me. The idea of being able to mind surf the web was well explored – but I think it was overdone.
My main criticism is that I found the explaining/telling style very wearing. It seriously detracted from the plot and I found myself skim reading large sections in order to get through it. I put this aside a few times because it was so distracting. All that said, I persevered. In summary I’d say good plot, interesting ideas, but could have been a lot better executed.

I enjoyed the plotting of this. It is a clever and interesting read, especially when you reach the end and are introduced to the science forecasts. The story moves at a rapid pace and is enjoyable.
