This book really deserved the 5* rating. This is a wonderfully written book and certainly gives an insight into what nursing was like during the Crimean War. The conditions were appalling.
I hope this author continues her writing, she has a great talent, I am just off to read her second novel!
I highly recommend this book, you really won’t be able to put it down.

This is not my usual sort of book but I really enjoyed it. The story of Ada and how her Grandfather died thinking her brother had been killed in an accident at the docks. When she realised they didn’t know what had happened to her brother she thought he might have gone on a boat to the Crimean to fight in the war. She decided to follow him and ended up nursing on the Front during the war where she met Florence Nightingale, who said she was a natural nurse.
A good book just going to start the follow up

Ada searching for her brother Ada finds herself nursing in the Crimean war working with Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole. I’m not sure how plausible a woman travelling to a warzone on the offchance of finding her brother is but an intersting story about some inspring women. A developing romance,

I have a read a lot of books set in the 19th century and so like to think I am familiar with the hard life that people led and the poor conditions they lived in back then, but nothing prepared me for what I read in this book. This book follows the story of Ada who becomes a nurse in the Crimea War and I have to warn you it is not a pretty read. The descriptions of the operations that took place at a time when nursing was in its infancy and there was no hygiene or sterile conditions like we have today was pretty horrifying and I have to confess that I almost gave up on the book partway through as I was not sure I could continue to read about things in such harrowing detail. However, I continued and I am so glad I did – although the gruesome details of the operations the injured soldiers went through does not diminish, by the end of the book my initial revulsion at such graphic details had given way to a fascination at how strong these people were at a time when anti-biotics did not exist and alcohol was used as a way to fight off infection. This is a must read and I cannot wait to read the next book in the series. Highly recommended.

This started off well and I read half the book in one sitting but then I thought it lost its rhythm and at times seemed implausible, however I still felt I wanted to finish it. I will certainly read her next book as I feel this is the start of a good series
