£0.99

When an amateur sleuth’s pub colleague is bumped off, can she work out who called time at the bar?

Since getting her life back on track after being wrongly accused of murder, Julia Ford is finally realizing her ambition of opening a bookshop in the sleepy English village of Biddle Rhyne.

But, best laid plans and all that, things go awry when she stumbles upon the body of Barry, who worked alongside her in the local pub.

That another murder has occurred doesn’t take much deducing: the knife sticking out of his back strongly suggests it was no accident.

This is just the beginning of a series of strange occurrences including stolen diggers, giant haystacks, haunted playground swings, and human remains that drag Julia, kicking and screaming, into another serious(ish) investigation.

Juggling a nascent career in crime-solving with one in bookselling, Julia has a lot on her plate. Can she catch another killer, or was her first case beginner’s luck?

Julia Ford is back in the second mystery of this series set in Somerset. I really enjoyed the first one so I was really looking forward to reading it. Both can be read as standalone stories so you don’t have to read them in order.
I was not disappointed. I’m loving this series. It’s the perfect cozy read, especially at t his time of year. The characters are relatable, the mystery is really intriguing – haunted swings! And it’s all wrapped up perfectly and told with engaging and easy-to-read prose. Can’t wait for more.

I picked this up having really enjoyed the first book in the series and it certainly didn’t disappoint. I found it to be an intriguing whodunit who which kept me guessing. The prose is light-hearted and witty, the setting in rural South West England is certainly very cozy, and it’s got a great cast of characters led by the quirky Julia Ford. All in all a fun book to read, and I look forward to seeing how the series develops.

I always choose stories set inthe uk written by Britush authors, preferably from the same area the book is set in, in the hope that all background will be accurate?
Whereas the storyline, and also in it’s predecessor, is enjoyable and moves along nicely keeping the reader’s interest, there are irritating gaps in the author’s background knowledge.
For example – a parish Council has a very specific small set of legal duties and that does not include planning. There are also irritating vocabulary slips – eg British vehicles have number plates, not license plates.
These are the kind of errors I find if I buy books set in the uk by foreign authors who might find the research into uk customs, habits and common language use a little more difficult, and frankly why I rarely buy their offerings.
It’s so disappointing to find lack of basic research from a uk author, who is not a stranger to the area, interrupting the flow in what would otherwise be a great read

Intriguing murder mystery, harder to work out who dun-it than in the first book.
