This book was gladly picked up by my 3year old who adores any nature themed books. The illustrations are beautifully enticing and the text offers a rich insight into those wonderful creatures. No doubt a book that will be treasured for many years to come.

43 pages of fun marine biology facts:

The text about each animal is short but skillfully picks out some of the most interesting and relevant facts about them so you feel like you get a fairly well-rounded insight into each creature.

I liked that even the adults reading this might find themselves wide-eyed as they discover new things about well-known creatures like starfish, squid, shrimps and otters. (I, for example, was amazed to learn that shrimps lay 1 million eggs in one go!).

The artwork is bright and colourful; the text is easy to read and this book is one that will be fun to dip into at any point to learn about creatures you come across by the sea. There is a child-friendly index at the back with pictures besides the page numbers to help a child locate the animal they’re looking for. A fantastic book.

    with thanks for the ARC

This book contains information about 20 different sea creatures each one across a double page. It’s so pretty and informative at the same time with lots of creature information facts and did you know information. This book was provided to me free of charge to review. I recommend reading it as its interesting , engaging and educational.

This is a very handy book to have. I didn’t know a lot of the facts in this book and had no idea about the size of some of these sea creatures. I like the way it is written and easy to follow and refer back to it from time to time. Children who are curious about sea creatures will love this book. There are a lot of misconceptions about certain animals and I had no idea that a sea turtle could not retract their legs and head. It is a simple book with not too overwhelming facts but just enough so you know what size the animals are, what they eat, a “did you know” fact, their diet, lifespan, habitat, scientific name and a short description about each one. There are 20 different sea creatures mentioned such as sea horse, octopus, great white shark, jellyfish, squid, crab and much more.
The illustrations are colourful, crisp and just wonderful, accurate and clear to see the little details on them.
This is a lovely book to use in a school setting to teach children about the different animals. I noticed at the back of the book that the author/illustrator also has other similar books in this series.

I received this Advanced Reading Copy directly from the Publishers.

My First Book of Sea Creatures is a children’s non fiction book as you may have guessed it, about different sea creatures.

Each double pages features a different creature – There are 20 in total. On the pages you will find the name of the creature and a small amount of information. An illustration of it. Creature facts. A ‘did you know?’ section and the creatures size in relation to other familiar items such as a bus.

The book is perfect for little ones as it doesn’t bombard them will lots of information and what it does state is written in an easy to understand way.

From Giant Manta Ray to Hermit Crab and Pufferfish to Bottlenose Dolphin, this book has lots of interesting creatures to read about.

Children can dip in whenever they want to and learn in a fun way.

    Short but very full.

For even quite young readers who like the natural world, they can enjoy the structure as found in books for older readers, but with content well-chosen for their level.

Starting with the familiar clownfish (Nemo!), 20 sea creatures get a double page that gives readers their habitat, weight, diet and lifespan, their Latin name, some ‘did you knows’, a picture showing them next to a recognisable object for size comparison, and a description. And of course a beautiful, full-colour illustration.

Many will be familiar to children who’ve watched Spy in the Ocean / David Attenborough (not just my kids I’m sure!) – great white shark, narwhal, sea horse, octopus, sea otter. A few will be lesser known but are just as interesting.

There is also an index at the back encouraging readers to tick off the ones they have seen.

There’s a few facts I didn’t know (starfish have no blood or brains), so it makes a very good family reference book aimed at the 4-7 year old market.

With thanks to Walker Books for providing a sample reading copy.
