Myths of Branding: Dispel the Misconceptions and Become a Brand Expert (Business Myths Book 9)

£8.40

A brand is just a logo – everyone knows that, don’t they? After all, it’s not as though a good brand can save a bad business, and besides, the digital revolution is making branding irrelevant…

Myths of Branding, written by renowned branding experts Andy Milligan and Simon Bailey, explores the huge number of misguided, mistaken and blatantly false myths that abound in the branding arena. From the belief that developing brands is nothing more than fiddling with logos, to the perception that it’s a ‘soft’ area of marketing that doesn’t go beyond visual identity and that the customer is always right – these myths are all surprisingly entrenched, yet could not be further from the truth.

Myths of Brandinguses up-to-date case studies and witty examples to debunk these popular misconceptions, and replaces them with the reality of what it’s really like to work in the world of branding. Jam-packed with entertaining anecdotes and useful information that practitioners can learn from, it guarantees a deeper, sharper understanding of the realities of branding and brand management.

Fantastic read and would very much recommend to marketers or those in business more broadly. Not only does it dispel the myths around branding in an astute, concise and extremely digestible way (this is a great book to dip in and out of BTW), but it’s also a great introduction / 101 on branding generally (and much better than many other brand introductory books, I’d say). I particularly like how it has lots of familiar examples , so not too theory heavy. A fab, easy to read, and hugely informative book.

I expected this book to be a ‘How to’ on brands and branding but it really isn’t. The authors argue clearly and coherently that in today’s world brands are in fact the totality of the relationship we have with organisations. Think of Apple or Amazon or Airbnb (or pick your favourite brands from any other letter of the alphabet!, they are so much more than a product or a service; we think about the entirety of the relationship we have with them. In this book the authors challenge the traditional narrow view of branding and take a number of common held beliefs and dispel them. If you are in branding or marketing you will find it valuable to think much more widely about your potential impact on customer as well as employees. If you are are in any of the other functions this will enable you to challenge the BS served up by some marketeers and brand agencies! What I enjoyed most was the simple, yet stimulating and authoritative style of the authors supported by lots of practical examples and take aways. Great stuff!

There’s a lot of nonsense written about brands and branding – but not in this book. Bailey and Milligan debunk the brand myths in a readable and entertaining book. Highly recommended.
