I nearly didn’t buy this book; I felt the images of the cover on Amazon looked really cheap and uninspiring. I ended up bying it simply because the knowledge containted within it is only available from Mr Dowding, so glumy waited for my rather drab book to arrive.
I could not have been more wrong. The build quality of the impressive fabric covered leaf bound hardback is possibly one of the best i’ve seen. the pages are thick, and full colour photogtraphs throughout make the content much easier to understand a read.
Not just an invaluable source of info on modern gardening and allotmenting using Charles’ patented ‘nodig’ method, but a genuinly lovely coffee table book Bravo Sir!

Why wouldn’t you grow this way????

You don’t need to be a fan of ‘no-dig’ to appreciate this book. Dowding is the propagator of this method of growing and he explains and demonstrates it beautifully. This book is exceptionally written and well researched.

The cover and illustrations are beautiful and the key aspects of achieving a no-dig approach are clearly set out

I have all the Charles Dowding books, except the recipe and children one, and wish No Dig came out first as it would have saved me money buying all the others (apart from the calendar/planner one which is great for organising one’s thought, though NOT the old Veg Journal one, which really isn’t the most useful).
No Dig has so much information, concisely and beautifully presented, that I refer to this more than his youtube videos now. It is less than half price of all the other books combined, but manages to cover the same info and whole lot more. The soil cycle bit and plant by plant profile for sowing, care, harvesting and seed saving with timeline really stands out. Unless you are specifically interested in Charles’ bed by the shed and small garden year by year output per kilogram (Veg Course), spacing diagram (Skills for growing), then this one pretty much does it all.
Don’t let the retro cover graphic put you off – as some other commenters said, it’s a well made, gorgeous book in real life. You’ll be a smarter and more motivated person having read just any page/chapter in it. Very highly recommended.
