This is the 5th edition of NOSH for Students, a book originally inspired by the author’s son, Ben, who left for university with no cooking skills. Toasted sandwiches and Mars bars were his staple diet, but these didn’t serve him too well! What was needed to encourage him to cook was an easily attainable taste of home, oh, and pictures with every recipe! Nosh for Students was born. Since then, Joy has helped over 400,000 students get cooking with her straightforward and simple approach. Joy helps to take the chore out of cooking, giving students a taste of success and making the experience so much fun.

Purchased it for my grandson who is in his first year at Uni.
Last evening we dined on a minced beef pasta dish prepared by him (he is currently residing with us due to the pandemic) and it was delicious – we intend to try one recipe per week. The instructions are very clear and as he has stated his intention to cook frequently when he returns to campus we are confident that this book will be his ‘cooking bible’!

I am in my 60s and retired, so about as far from being a student as it is possible to get, but I love this book even though it is not aimed at me.

To be honest, I loathe cooking, but I cannot afford to eat ready meals and takeaways every day so I started buying recipe books earlier this year when I finally got sick and tired of eating the same two or three meals that I knew how to cook. The problem was that most of the books are either full of complicated recipes or are trying to force people to eat the type of rabbit food that the writers think we should. I enjoy one-pot meals with lots of meat in them so the Devil can take the bunny-huggers and their vegetarian nonsense.

The advantage of Nosh for Students is that it makes the process as simple as possible to turn out tasty results. So, you are not expected to have a set of scales as all the measuring is done via a coffee mug. That, or it involves the contents of a can.

Most of the recipes are basically stews or bakes, so they are easy to throw together, but they often have a nice twist which adds to the flavour of the concoction. For instance, I made the Beefy Bake recipe which involves putting grated cheese on top of a minced beef and pasta base and the result was something that my taste buds really enjoyed.

All in all a good buy.

I have a few favourites from here that I will make again and again. However some recipes from this book, especially the ones that involve potatoes, come out very badly. For example, the “cheesy potatoes” (which is quite like a gratin) recipe requires you to put raw potatoes in an oven in a cassarole dish and bake them for 30-35 mins and pray to god they’ll actually be cooked in that time. Well a quick google search will reveal to you how you either need to pre-boil the potatoes before putting them in the oven to bake them in this time, or you need to bake them for over an hour. Enjoy your warmed raw potato slices, kids!

The pictures were enticing enough to make me want to cook things, and some of the meals made this worth it, but as others have said, there’s probably better books for students out there.

As it is a present I have not been testing any recipes. However, unlike most other books, which say or suggest they are aimed at students, it seems to have a very practical approach. It does not list enormous numbers of implements etc which are “necessary” nor “items you should have in your cupboard” (in a shared kitchen!! – how long would they stay there). The recipes are simple and look very easy to follow.
I hope he finds it useful.

A great book for the non cook. My student son is not at all interested in cooking but is going to have to be if he wants to survive university. He has shown an instant interest in this cookery book and I am expecting great things. I also think it could turn cooking into a sociable pursuit with his friends. Fingers crossed …

This is the simplest cookbook I have ever come across — makes it easy to get decent at cooking and also explains the basics of things like pasta, potatoes, sandwiches to more complex weekend dinners and deserts. Great if you find cooking a big hassle but this book has many basic recipes which tastes great! A must get for beginners or those who struggle with cooking

I bought this for my son who was moving into student halls. He didn’t have much of a clue in the kitchen before this book but now he does! The range of recipes is huge and he’s found it so easy to follow. Totally recommend for anyone just starting out!

Such a good recipe book – it’s great having a book full of ideas which don’t require strange, hard to find ingredients and things you can create in 30-60 minutes.
Love the fact that each recipe comes with it’s own picture and the fact that it includes different sauce, salad dressing ideas is great. The cheese sauce in here is so much simpler than the one I was making before, and is equally as tasty.
    Massive game changer 🙂
