It’s time to get a pet! Will Mabel find the perfect one for her family?
Hooray! Mabel and her family are getting a pet! There’s no time to lose! But which kind of animal should they choose? Not the snake – it’s too scary. The elephant’s too big. The worms are too wriggly and the hyena too giggly. Then Mabel has the perfect idea. But will her family agree? A laugh-out-loud rhyming story about finding the perfect pet – with plenty of hilarious twists along the way.

My four year old son really enjoys this book being read to him at night, he loves the little rat and enjoys all the rhyming words.
I received this review copy from Walker books.

Good to see a ‘blended’ family in a book – what the talking point amongst the children was what happened to the animals the family decided not to keep – where did they go? Each animal could have an after story!

This book is a fun and adventurous book filled with lots of funny scenarios. Mabel is trying to decide which pet would be the perfect pet and she has a lot of different pets delivered to her home. They all turn out to be unsuitable for one reason or another, too big, too small, too smelly, too slithery and the list goes on and on.
There is lots of laughs to be had while you flick through and read the pages. The illustrations are very well done and show you exactly what is going on in the book. Even if a very young reader is looking through the book they will be able to work out what is happening and I am sure laugh out loud at the funny scenes.
The text on the pages are reasonably large and for educational purposes I think there are lots of words that children could learn from this book.
The animal that Mabel settles for is still not ideal but probably a better choice than the others.
I would highly recommend this book as it is just fun and enjoyable.

Not that pet! is an amusing fun rhyming story from children’s author Smriti Halls.
The young girl in the book has been told she can choose any pet, but some are too small, others too smelly, some are too slithery or prickly.
She goes through lots of pets all with the same response from her family – ‘Not that Pet!’.
I found this story highly amusing and giggled along with it. I can see young children loving it as well as enjoying the fabulous illustrations that accompany the words.
I also loved the ending. I won’t spoil it for others as to what pet the little girl finally chooses but I approve.
A wonderful, fun picture book that I can see being a bit hit with its readers.

This is such a funny picture book with some great rhyming that children will love! Mabel’s family is getting a pet and Mabel is allowed to choose which one. She can have any pet she wants, so she chooses…an elephant! Mabel’s family aren’t so happy with the elephant though, so they ask her to choose another pet, but with each choice the animals become stranger and stranger and more and more difficult for the family to cope with. The paperback is a bit bigger than A4, certainly wider, and is filled with lots of glossy thick pages of very colourful illustrations and text.
This is such a funny book that it had me laughing from the first pages. Mabel begins by choosing an elephant, but the elephant proves to be too much trouble, being so big and in the way of everything, so her mum tells her to choose something smaller. So Mabel’s next choice is ants, but the ants prove to be too difficult too getting in to all sorts of interesting places. The story continues with Mabel choosing lots of different animals, none of them your usual traditional pets like a dog or hamster. In the end though Mabel does make the right choice, or so you think, though there is a funny twist on the last page which I really wasn’t expecting and which made me and my whole family laugh and smile.
The illustrations are really wonderful and colourful and I love how expressive the family are with the different pets. I love how the animals look too with each pet getting into all sorts of trouble around Mabel’s house and family. The illustrations just look really great and really help with the humour of the story. The story itself rhymes constantly, and with some repetition to the parts where Mabel chooses another pet, it just makes it so much fun reading for kids and I’m sure many children will enjoy looking at this book again and again. I’m sure many adults too will enjoy it for how funny and silly the story is.

Brilliant, had us both laughing. And yes, very much like an older child’s Dear Zoo. Mabel’s allowed to choose a pet – hmm, an elephant! Perfect. Well, it’s soon discovered to have its flaws (sitting on Mum). How about something small? Ants! Hmm. They have their flaws too. How about something everyone can see?
And on it goes. Every choice seems to have something that causes problems. Including a great scene of both chlidren on their toilets/potties as a certain new pet slithers around! And a great giggle about Dad’s underpants as well.
The rhymes are fab, very easy to read them aloud, though every other page ends with prose that you have to get used to before the rhyme starts again.
Repetition, humour, rhyme, and funny illustrations. And an unexpected ending that children won’t see coming first time, and comes with its own visual jokes as well.
Great for home and school, will amuse all readers.
For ages 3-6.

Mabel wants a pet, but unfortunately some of her choices are far from ideal. The elephant sits on Mabel’s mum, the ants crawl into her dad’s underpants and snake coils itself around Grandad’s neck! Will Mabel ever find her ideal pet?
This book reminded me a lot of Dear Zoo. It’s a similar concept, but aimed at slightly older readers. My son really enjoyed the book, it has bright, colourful illustrations and the text is rhyming and repetitive which always seems to be a hit when it comes to books for young children. We would recommend!
