This I thought was a bit different to some of Colleen Hoover’s other books in that it was a bit slower in it’s build up but it was worth it.
The characters actions at times are insanely frustrating but it all makes up for a great read at the end as always.
There’s brutal and triggering things in some of her books but this is the first one to nearly bring a tear, maybe because it hit on a personal level, I’m not sure but it really was touching.
I read it in about 24hrs so it’s definitely one that keeps you hooked!

I chose this book as I really wanted to try another Colleen Hoover book to see what the fuss was about after reading ‘It ends with us’ which, from what I have read, is a little different to her usual topic. This one seemed to have very mixed reviews, unfortunately, I read them after I bought the book though so was already committed.
I connected with the story straight from the beginning, although there was a lot of self-pity and self-depreciation from the start which was a little off-putting, to be honest. However, I was soon lost in the story between them and intrigued by their decision to meet every November 9th for five years while Fallon became 23, where her mother implied, she would know and love herself enough by then to be able to fall in love with someone else.
The biggest issues I had were with the characters. The way Ben acts at times is astounding. His thoughts about her boobs and underwear repeatedly are so shallow, especially in retrospect after you’ve read the rest of the book, as are his comments and ordering Fallon to wear what he wants her to “I’m paying for dinner, so I get to choose what to stare at while we eat.” There are also plenty of cringe moments with him “Baby, you already made this the best sex I’ve had, and I’m not even inside you yet.” Having said that though there are plenty of other times where he is quite funny or loving even and he can transform Fallon’s day. I’m just not sure that some of his attitude/character is really appropriate for the current time.
Fallon is also quite flawed; she doesn’t question nearly enough how weird it is for Ben to join her and her father and pretend to be her (very touchy-feely) boyfriend when they are complete strangers. As mentioned before her self-pity is quite off-putting. The way she allows Ben to treat her at times and her acceptance of the things he says is also quite worrisome.
Overall though I did enjoy the book. I liked the way that it was set over six years and yet hung well together. I liked the way they fell in love over just one day a year and despite it being just that one day they still managed to fall out plenty over the time as well, it wasn’t all sunshine and roses. I also loved the massive twist towards the end, which made the ending even more annoying, you can’t just roll over and forget everything with a “well we all make mistakes” kind of attitude after everything that has gone before. To end on a positive thought, I did love the premise of the book and the format of the once-a-year meetup.

I don’t want to just slate this book as there something to be said for the fact that I finished it in one day – I think that’s mainly down to Colleen’s style of writing; it is very easy to read. There was also just enough intrigue created about how the story was going to end to keep me hooked, however, I could not stop eye rolling the whole way through the first ‘part’ of the book. I was physically cringing at the stuff Ben was saying and how we were supposed to believe that an 18 year old boy said these things genuinely. Fast forward to the ‘huge twist’ (not) and it got a little better, but not for long – I don’t want to give any spoilers but Fallon’s mum?! And Fallon, for that matter?! Both of their reactions were the most frustrating and unbelievable thing. Fallon’s reactions to most things were unbelievable and I found it so irritating – perhaps that added to why I just couldn’t seem to let myself enjoy the book. All that said, I think I will give Colleen Hoover another go and try another book, as her style of writing was addictive and the concept for the story was good, so I think she deserves another chance.

This book should be made into a movie. God so beautiful. Loved the story, loved the characters, and I honestly don’t think there’s a thing in this book that I didn’t enjoy, that K didn’t love. Since September, I have red 18 Colleen Hoover books. I didn’t love all of them, but this book is definitely in my top 3. It is definitely in my top 3 favourite books of all time.

My first Colleen Hoover Novel…I enjoyed her writing style and will definitely read more of her books.
I enjoyed the ‘young love’ in this book – bit of nostalgia!
Ben’s character isn’t a believable normal 18-23 year old guy, he’s more like film character but I think if you take it with a pinch of salt it’s enjoyable. (Who wants to read about a normal 18yr old boy though right?)
Like the twist, I’d figured part of it out but not totally and my theory was something different so I enjoyed the moment where this came clear.
Would recommend as an enjoyable and easy read.
Not 5* as I didn’t find it the story totally amazing.
