In 2016, Sheila Hancock sat down to write a book about a serene and fulfilled old age. This is not that book.
In Old Rage, one of Britain’s best-loved actors opens up about her tenth decade. Funny, feisty, honest, she makes for brilliant company as she talks about her life and takes an uncompromising look at a world so different from the one of her wartime childhood. And yet – despite age, despite rage – she finds there are always reasons for joy.
‘The much-loved actor candidly shares the fear, joy and frustration she has found in her ninth decade’ Guardian, Books of the Year 2022
‘Sheila Hancock reflects upon her life and career with all the winning candour and warm-heartedness we have come to expect from the legendary actress’ Waterstones

I did not put this book down unless it was absolutely necessary. Sheila is a couple of years older than I am and she is an inspiration. Considering her lack of ‘education’ it is astonishing how well informed and ‘revolutionary’ she is. I admire her tremendously and identify with her absolutely. Don’t ever think, Sheila that you didn’t make a difference or an impact on life. You just did on mine.

Maybe too much on theatrical career.

Sheila Hancock comes over as witty, worldly-wise, theatrical, professional and much more. The book opens well with some cracking stories and I settled down for what I thought would be a really good read.
But she spoils it with several pages raging about Brexit. She is not in favour of it. She’s entitled to her opinion. But I don’t want to read about contentious politics; I don’t find it interesting or enlightening. If there’s much more of it I’ll ask Amazon if I can return the book and get a refund.

As a person in my latter years, l have enjoyed this book immensely. It also bought back the trauma of covid, which as a vulnerable person l endured the same ghastly experience. Sheila writers with passion and honesty. She has had a amazing life, yet so humble. I can highly recommend this book.

I bought the book because I like autobiographies and I thought I liked Sheila Hancock.
There is so much anger in her words I found little to smile about. From Brexit to politicians to Covid she seems to be saying the world (and Britain in particular ) is a horrible place and she can’t wait to get out of it.
Have to say I skipped through some of her real rants but being an avid reader, I have never given up on a book in my 73 years. I came very, very close to giving up on this one. a depressing and unmemorable read.

As a woman of her age +2 – I totally agree with her thoughts and sentiments – keep breathing Sheila !
