On Afghanistans Plains: The Story of Britains Afghan Wars

Britain’s military involvement in Afghanistan is a contentious subject, yet it is often forgotten that the current conflict is in fact the fourth in a string of such wars dating back more than 170 years. Aiming to protect British India from the expanding Russian empire, the British fought a series of conflicts on Afghan territory between 1838 and 1919. The Anglo-Afghan wars of the 19th and early 20th centuries were ill-conceived and led to some of the worst military disasters ever sustained by British forces in this part of the world, with poor strategy in the First Afghan War resulting in the annihilation of 16,000 soldiers and civilians in a single week. In his new book, Jules Stewart explores the potential danger of replaying Britain’s military catastrophes and considers what can be learnt from revisiting the story of these earlier Afghan wars.

I was attracted to this book due to my growing interest in the history of Afghanistan and the North West Frontier. In particular, I liked the fact this book covers all three wars between the British and Afghans from 1839 to 1919. This provided me with a through overview of the wars in a single volume. Despite this the book is not too brief and contain much detail.

As a Military historian and veteran of the current conflict in Afghanistan. I couldn’t wait to read this book. Very well written account of the past British wars in Afghanistan up to todays conflict. It covers both the Political and Military backgrounds to these wars. It also shows that the problems of Britain’s last ventures in this country are still the same problems facing British/ISAF Forces today and that we haven’t learned from our past mistakes. I would definately recommend.

You cannot expect an in-depth account in one volume however, as an introduction offering a great deal of information this is a good place to start.
