When an all-star college athlete is charged with murdering a fellow student, attorney Sam Johnstone must solve a crime that isn’t as clear-cut as it appears.
“James Chandler’s experience as a lawyer and Army veteran shines in every page of his brilliant legal thrillers.” —Jason Kasper, USA Today Bestselling Author of The Spider Heist
After an impressive performance in front of a full house, local college basketball stand-out Davonte Blair celebrates the victory with a few friends. But when a fierce argument over drugs ensues, the evening takes a violent turn—and one member of the group goes missing.
When police discover the body of the basketball team manager, the town turns into a tinderbox of emotions. The media is calling it a hate crime. The college president is desperate to avoid a scandal. And the police department is under intense pressure to solve the horrific case.
As defense attorney Sam Johnstone looks into the murder, the case grows even more complicated. Ronnie Norquist, the son of Sam’s longtime friend and law partner was the dead student’s roommate—and Ronnie was there the night his roommate disappeared.
His personal and professional worlds colliding, Sam can tell Ronnie knows more than he’s letting on. But what is it that Ronnie witnessed? And whose guilt does it prove?
In a case that’s full of circumstantial evidence and competing versions of truth, Sam must find out what really happened—before this college town tears itself apart.

Great read. Fast twisting and gripping. But there’s more to this underlying. Grabs you at the end to read the next one!

This is the 2nd of the Sam Johnston books and a bit repetitive on the first but developing the people. They are all strong characters and they story line is constant with just enough personal chat to provide secondary interest. Hope the third book varies from the first two now to add strength to Sam.

Sparkling with energy, wrong turns, twisty plot and deceitful clients great reading for a warm summer’s day or tucked up on a cold winters night.

New To me. Now on my third book of his. Great writer couldn’t put it down.
Almost as good as my favourite writer RJ Ellory . Looking forward to Chandlers third book

Stuck with it in the hope it would get going, it doesn’t really. The lead character Sam is one dimensional and his daemons get in the way. The defendant was a nasty piece of work but just kept saying the same things over and over. Lots of cliche characters and the ending wasn’t such a big surprise. Nothing like a Grisham.

I read this book (KU) after greatly enjoying Book 1 in the series. This is a classic legal thriller, with a slow burn start then a great build up in momentum to the final verdict…then, the after-verdict. A gripping narrative but also a book for our times, with a lot to make readers stop and think. Highly recommended. Am moving straight on to Book 3.

I have to admit to skimming pages of technical stuff when in court, and guessed parts of the story, but not the actual ending, so kudos to him. I will try number three and hopefully not as much repetition.

Another Sam Johnstone legal thriller. As I read this, I began to realise that I had discovered an author who could give Grisham a run for his money.
The story was tightly written, with believable characters and a gripping plot. The fact that Sam Johnstone has his own set of demons makes him even more believable. Add to that a couple of unexpected twists and you have a rattling good story.
I was fortunate enough to get hold of an advanced review copy and thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it. If you only read one legal thriller this year it should be this one.
