This beautiful book presents one hundred great works from the National Gallery Collection, each by a different artist. Arranged in chronological order and accompanied by Louise Goviers lively text, full-page reproductions of these selected highlights introduce you to some of the most inspiring paintings ever made. From the earliest Italian altarpiece of around 1265, to the most recent – Paul Cézannes great Bathers, of about 18941905 – each painting has been chosen for its unique significance; whether representing a particular artist, a place or a time, or simply for its beauty and the pleasure it provides.

A brilliant book with very good pictures of some of the painting on one page and information about the painting and the artist on the facing page.
i love the art gallery and visit often, but this book gave details about some of my favourites that I did not know.

This is a beautiful book. It has one full page picture for each painting and one page opposite with text – not too much and not too scarily academic. Its a great way of finding your way into art, a bit like an anthology of poems is a good way into poetry, and it doesn’t matter if you don’t like all the paintings because there are so many to chose from.

Mostly portrait paintings. Hoped for a wider variety.
