I’m not a great reader of romantic novels. But I do adore Greece and the Greek people, visiting at least twice a year for very many years, there aren’t many areas not visited. So when I was short of novels to read whilst away I looked to this author.
Choosing this author wasn’t a mistake, the books are fairly well written but something bothered me.
This summer I’ve done something I almost never do and reread the work.
Suddenly on this reading it hit me, it’s the geography of Methoni that had bothered me, in both my first and subsequent rereading. It’s been altered presumably to fit the authors story board but why !
I really don’t understand authors who name an actual place, building or time but alter it to fit their story. If you are unable to keep to a known fact, surely an author should be capable of inventing a place and mapping it into their story board.
My maxim of how much I enjoyed a novel is always
“Would I read another novel from this author?” Probably not .

Such a beautifully written story. I Love all Greek stories, it takes one away from our mundane lives. Its almost like being on holiday.

I read the authors second book first and because I couldn’t put it down, I read the first book straight after. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and look forward to the third book

After the death of her mother, a famous artist, Sophie travels to Methoni in Greece in search of a missing painting and the secret of why her mother disappeared there on holiday every year.
The descriptions of Greece and, in particular, the food took me back to a holiday on a Greek islandmany years ago. In addition to the search for the missing painting there is a romantic interest in a local man, Theo. Counterbalancing the glorious location and food there are more serious subjects including abuse and miscarriages – the latter will strike a chord with anyone who has been unfortunate enough to have suffered from this. In summary not a light read (not that there is anything wrong with these), with the above subjects included, but one to make you think and either relate to the issues or to give thanks that you’ve not suffered from them.
I received an advance copy of this book from the publisher through Netgalley, however this did not influence my review of the book and I subsequently purchased it upon release.

This is a good book, well written and with strong characters, but it has a huge flaw. In smaller typeface in the Acknowledgements at the very end of the novel the author apologises for messing about with the geography of Methoni and surrounding areas and I had already finished the book before I found this and I had very nearly given up after the first few chapters because the Methoni described as the main location bore absolutely no resemblance to the Methoni I know well.
If the author has herself not visited Methoni surely it would have been wiser to give the place a fictitious name. Even Modini based on the ancient name Modon would suffice because this ‘messed up’ description of the location certainly detracted from an otherwise excellent book where the writer clearly has empathy and understanding of the Greek character.

This book is truly amazing, it made me feel like I was walking along the Greek sand with the character. I truly recommend this author.

Still reading this book, although took a bit of getting into as is written in the ” I looked out to the sea….” ” I thought of mum” etc.
If you like books based in Greece/Greek connections you will like this one – has a twist in that you may not see coming!
