WATERSTONES’ BEST BOOKS OF 2023: BIOGRAPHY
The last book from bestselling author and advocate Wendy Mitchell
‘This beautiful book will give hope and courage to many people. An uplifting and courageous read’ KATHRYN MANNIX
‘Anyone who reads Mitchell’s work can only admire her passion, her energy and her extraordinary courage’ SUNDAY TIMES

Wendy Mitchell doesn’t fear anything anymore. After her diagnosis of young-onset dementia in 2014, all of Wendy’s old fears – the dark, animals – melted away. What more was there to be afraid of when she faced her worst fear: losing her own mind?

While living with her diagnosis and facing the extreme changes that come along with a progressive terminal illness, Wendy wrote two Sunday Times-bestselling books, went skydiving for the first time and supports multiple dementia advocacy groups in the UK. She is known for talking about living with dementia, but now – while she is still able to – she explores dying with it.

In One Last Thing, Wendy embarks on a journey to explore all angles of death: how we can prepare for it, how we talk about it with our loved ones and how we can be empowered to make our own choices. With conversations on the topic of assisted dying, from those who are fighting to make it legal to those vehemently opposed to its practice, Wendy reminds us that to get on with the business of living, we need to talk about death.

Wendy Mitchell is so inspiring. She tackles living with dementia and death. Two topics people want to avoid but everyone should talk about.

What a fantastic end to the trilogy, well done Wendy!
Honestly talking about death and dying, but more importantly, how to live life to the maximum while planning for a good death.

A courageous description of the process of going over the edge of dementia, to a place where the fog never clears; and what the author would wish were in place in terms of support for her choice to die before that end to her spirit, but not to her body.

This woman, at the end of life, offers advice to friends and family, as well as anyone mortally ill.

This is a landmark book well written from the perspective of living with dementia and planning the inevitable end. Most sufferers lose control and are at the mercy of carers, family and the NHS and face a long downhill slide with carers having to guess the mental state and wishes. Wendy Marshall has the courage and help to show that she for one wants some control over her life’s end and why not? There is a telling chapter with Baroness ******* who represents the hospice movement who does not listen to Wendy and comes across as an intolerant sanctimonious bigot. Then a chapter with a Dr Forrest in California who works with their dignity in dying movment helping people end their lives legally and she is a breath of compassion and understanding.
Wendy adds a hugely important, well informed voice to those calling for a change in the UK law to bring us up to date with the rest of the democratic nations on the issue of assisted dying. As a life long UK GP with lots of experience in this field I absolutely support Wendy and her plea for more compassion. God bless her.
