OSCOLA: The Oxford University Standard for Citation of Legal Authorities
£10.40
There are two golden rules for the citation of legal authorities. One is consistency. The other is consideration for the reader. Legal writing is more persuasive when the author refers to legal materials in a clear, consistent and familiar way. The Oxford University Standard for Citation of Legal Authorities (OSCOLA) helps authors to achieve consistency in citing cases, legislation and secondary sources. And it helps authors to make life easier for their readers. OSCOLA is widely used by law schools and legal publishers both in the United Kingdom and abroad. This latest revision of OSCOLA (the fourth edition) is the first to be published in hard copy, and provides more detailed coverage of both primary and secondary legal sources. The editors are Donal Nolan and Sandra Meredith.

Perfect if you’re doing a law degree

I just love this.Cannot recommend it enough. It has really helped me brush up on my legal citation. Coming from a Kenyan legal tradition and having to adapt to UK standards so I can offer legal editing services to students, this has been insightful and an invaluable resource. I cannot recommend it enough. The booklet is quite comprehensive but retains a justified size, neither too bulky nor having too much information so is good for quick browsing as well as in-depth reading. It is quite clear that a lot has changed since I was a law student and I am just happy to delve into this one and find out more. Its an easy read.
It does say that there is a free version of the same thing to be found at the OSCOLA website. However, I am still happy with my purchase, for all the information in it and the simple presentation style, the price was a steal.

I am a postgraduate law student in the UK,. Therefore, understanding Oscola referencing is a must. I purchased the book, because I saw multiple versions of quick guides on line, but I lacked confidence in their content. I was a bit disappointed, because I didn’t think the text showed enough diagrams or provided enough examples to add clarity to the oscola referencing process. Having the book versus a download handout did provide me confidence, but the next version should include paged examples of the bibliography, cover sheets, and diagrams of pages with the reference system in use.

The book itself is amazing – I would defiantly recommennd to those studying their law degree. It is better than printing off the really long guide off the internet in order annotate when this book is a lot more compact and you haven’t got lots of loose papers hanging around. I also like the fact that it is laminated front and back.
Having said all of this, I am a little disappointed because when the book arrived it appeared to have been previously used as the edges were dog-eared and there are a few scores on the front and back of the book – not please condisering it was delivered straight from Amazon themselves, I paid £10 including delivery and the fact that I intend to keep the book for a long period of time. I do like my things to looking brand new so this was a bit of a let down.
Overall this is a must have !!!

The description was a bit off as the actual thing has less pages than what turns up. It is very useful for referencing legal works and certainly does the job…. However…. all the information is actually available online and as it only comes soft bound with a plastic ring binder you could probably just print it off and stick it together yourself saving some money.
It’s very useful but suppose it’s probably over priced for what it is.

Intriguingly the copy I received is spiral bound, even though I ordered the paperback – no complaints though as I thought it would be a better format (but baulked at paying 2x as much for the spiral bound version on the order page).
You can download and print this for free (and I have printed off the quick reference guide to add to my folders) from the OSCOLA website, however I’m really pleased with my printed copy, which is a must have for those studying for a law qualification.
