This was the third and final of the ottoline books I have bought for my daughter. She absolutely loves them. Sucked in from the first page. They are also fun for me to read to her or to listen to as the story is so of usual and engaging. The illustrations are wonderful and draw you deeper into the character.

As I have related elsewhere, I got to know about Ottoline when my sister was visiting with her children, Freddy, seven, and Hannah, five. She brought “Ottoline and the Yellow Cat” back from the library, and everyone loved it so much that I bought the complete set of three books from Amazon for them to take home. They had also read “Ottoline Goes To School” from the library, but “Ottoline at Sea” was new to everyone. My sister and I both read it in the evening while the children were in bed before she read it to them the next morning. It is full of clever jokes, both on the spot and running, and ravishingly detailed illustrations (the seaplane pilot Minty Woodvine is particularly gorgeous – like a warmer-natured version of Angelina Voight.) The supplied “bog goggles” are particularly clever: not just a novelty, but a tool that really is necessary to make out the secret illustrations which are otherwise unintelligible. I have given it only four marks out of five because the plot isn’t quite as good as in the other two stories, and because though highly ingenious the bog goggles are slightly hard to use: in particular, with the vital last image explaining Mr Monroe’s reasons for going AWOL, you can’t see the whole thing at once, and the page has to be absolutely flat before the interference fringes cohere properly, which becomes more difficult with bigger illustrations. Even with those caveats, though, it’s still among the best children’s books I’ve ever read. Freddy and Hannah (and I!) would love to read more about Ottoline, but it’s obvious that with those intricate pictures the books represent a tremendous amount of work by Chris Riddell, so I fear we’ll have to wait a long time to read about her again.

My daughter loves Ottoline and I find it really hard to get all 3 books from book stores. this one seemed to be the hardest. Read very qucikly and has read time and time again. Really wonderful books, would recommend for any avid reader. full of adventure.

My daughter is dyslexic and so it has been an absolute struggle for her in regard to reading. But she absolutely loved these books and has since read and reread them countless times. The illustrations are beautiful and help tell the story. She was also so proud as she was reading what looked like a “proper book” but she wasn’t overwhelmed by too much text on each page. Can not recommend them highly enough.

Fantastic series of books, which my girls (6 and 8) love. Beautiful illustrations, interesting stories, a great bridge from pictures to a more grown up way of reading. Only downside is that Chris Riddell needs to write more!!!

My daughter whizzed through the Ottoline books faster than any book series before, enjoying both the faintly surreal storylines and the beautiful and peculiar illustrations. These books should become classics.

My son, who is 7 and a good reader, really loved this book. He read this alone and said it was funny – we ended up buying the rest of the series for him. I did wonder if it might be too “girly” for him as it has a female main character (just based on his reaction to things in the past), but he was fine with it.

The illustrations are lovely and really engaging – I enjoyed looking through this too.

My daughter loves these books and the illustrations are just beautiful. We were lucky enough to meet Chris Riddell and have this book signed so it is extra special now!!
