The range of texts reflects the themes explored in the exhibition, relating to the artist’s childhood memories and everyday life, the experience of love and the loss of the beloved. It also addresses broader socio-political issues, such as the policing of women’s bodies, the struggle to legalise abortion, and the fight against authoritarianism and war, from the dictatorship in Portugal to the Iraq War. The book reflects the richness of Rego’s work, from the socio-political context to the biographical, from her many literary references to her vast knowledge and referencing of key historical paintings from the Western tradition.

I just struggle with the accompanying text.
Elena Crippa tells us in her first paragraph and talking about Rego’s work ‘interrogation’ that the woman is flanked by two men. One holds a screwdriver the other a drill. Clearly Crippa can see something that I can’t. I think she is identifying the chair back as a screwdriver and as for the other paint being a drill – a cordless drill maybe?
Then there are the bulging crotches of the tradesmen. Surely that is just the cut of the trousers. A portly stomach maybe but nothing more. A little over enthusiastic interpretation I feel.
