I was 17 when I received my Home Nursing and Palliative Care certificates (the latter was originally called “End of Life Progression”) but I have always kept my knowledge up to date.

Cancer and Palliative Care Nursing is one of a series of “Placement Learning” books which have been written by nurses for nurses.

The book is divided into 3 sections:

1 – preparation for placement experiences
        2 – placement learning opportunities
3 – consolidating learning: the patient experience

        Areas covered include:

        – what cancer is
        – perceptions of cancer
        – how cancer is diagnosed and the impact of diagnosis
        – different treatments
        – management of symptoms
        – caring for patients at the end of life
        – case studies

The information is interesting and accessible for most, if not all, reader.

The book could do with flow charts so that the student nurse can follow through the procedures, some graphs and some colour to break up the continuous monochrome. I realise that it is for pocket guide for use by students but a supporting CD-ROM for home study and backup for the text would have been a welcome bonus.

There is, however, one problem – the size of the print used is tiny, really tiny and could cause problems for anyone with less than perfect eyesight

Whether you’re a student nurse about to a start your placement or a newly qualified nurse about to start you’re first job on a ward this small pocket sized guide will definitely be a useful and informative resource for you.
Covering all the main pallative issues you’ll find enough detailed information written in a clear and concise form that can be read quickly ‘on the go’ to get you through the day.
        Definately worth the money.

This little book is aimed specifically at students who are undertaking a clinical placement for specialist cancer care/pallative care. I am not training to be a nurse, but I am interested in this subject. I found this book to be a bit more than I could understand, although the writing and layout of the book has been kept simple, with allot of information and help to increase your learning in this subject. This includes:

        Chapter aims
        Further reading
        References
Activites (practical ways to improve your understanding)

This is a very handy book for the student nurse. It is literally packed with loads of information, guidence, illustrations and advice.

        A must for student nurses.

Would recommend this book to all student nurses attending a cancer an palliative care setting.
There is lot to take in during your practice time and usually a lot of questions regarding care, symptoms, medications, type of chemotherapy and treatments. This guide gives an overview of all aspect of care provided to patients with cancer, it is easy to read and understandable.
An excellent resource for all students going into cancer/ palliative care settings and for student interested in this area of nursing.

I bought this for a palliative care placement I was allocated. The book covers a really great area within palliative care but also learning competencies, would recommend for anyone doing a placement within this setting

There are some jobs that are difficult but rewarding – even though some of the results are truly heartbreaking. I’ll be honest I don’t have the courage to be able to do this job but I so admire the people who do work in palliative care and in oncology and I needed this book to ensure that my patients are being referred correctly and to assist the students who come onto the ward who are still learning their trade in the nhs. It is a rewarding book and I at least now know the challenges that the staff there feel – if you are facing this challenge then this book is a gentle warm push into the unknown.

When I searched for a book on ‘cancer nursing’ to read before my new placement, I never expected to find a book specifically directed at students – especially those in the UK – and at such an amazing price! The other books I found were well out of my budget range.

Excellent book, full of all the information a second year student might possibly need when embarking on an Oncology placement, or indeed when revising for exams (I could have done with having this book before my Pathophysiology exam last week, but never mind).

Student nurses – buy this book, you will not regret it!
