In Play Poker Like the Pros, poker master Phil Hellmuth, Jr., demonstrates exactly how to play and win — even if you have never picked up a deck of cards — the modern games of poker, including: Texas Hold’em, Omaha, Seven-Card Stud, and Razz.
Phil Hellmuth, Jr., a seven-time World Champion of Poker, presents his tournament-tested strategies to beat any type of player, including:
- The Jackal (crazy and unpredictable)
- The Elephant (plays too many hands)
- The Mouse (plays very conservatively)
- The Lion (skilled and tough to beat)
Play Poker Like the Pros begins by laying out the rules and set-up of each game and then moves on to easy-to-follow basic and advanced strategies. Hellmuth teaches exactly which hands to play, when to bluff, when to raise, and when to fold. In addition Hellmuth provides techniques for reading other players and staying cool under pressure. There are also special chapters on how to beat online poker games and an inside look at tournament play.

It’s shockingly badly written. The information is there and I’m not denying that. It is targeted at three levels of play starting at beginner level. It’s too garbled just try picking out what you need which is how the book is set up for, and I would deny this book to anyone.

Fantastic book, really took my playing from beginner to actually understanding the game. This will put you above most newbies and be aware on playing position, style, opening hands and very importantly when NOT to play

Read the title – it says it all. Nevertheless I still gave this book 4 out of 5 stars because of one little ingredient; Hellmuth’s ego. The difference between this book and the books of many other professionals is that Hellmuth likes not only to tell us how great he is, but also to prove it with words that cannot be ignored.
Whilst I am a massive fan of Dan Harrington (and his books), I cannot argue that Phil Hellmuth is without doubt a fantastic player of Hold’em and what he writes about is bare facts, whereas some others might not divulge all their secrets; if you get my drift. We can’t think like Dan Harrington but Phil, who has won an enormous amount in the game, lays it on the line for us so that we mere mortals can absorb precisely what Phil has done to be where he is.
Although a little patronising (I’d expect nothing less from Phil) this book is a real insight into the game of poker and should be on the bookcase of any serious poker player. I enjoyed the read; I hope you do too.

Pros
====
Offers a solid, simple, winning method of play for beginners.
Explains the psychology of other types of play.
Covers the most popular forms of poker.
Cons
====
Phils annecdote’s about his wins are tiresome.
Not enough about pot/no limit holdem
The title is misleading. Helmuth only pushes his own style, which will be too defensive for a lot of players.
Overall
======
Some critics will say that Helmuth does not give enough details on how to play out hands. I think that is a good thing. I agree with him that you need to learn how to play hands, by actually playing them.
As an absolute beginner, following Helmuth’s advice, I found that I was slowly making money after only one week of intensive play. The more i have played the better I have become, without the need for any book on advanced strategy.
Some pros suggest a more aggressive system for beginners, but I think that is wrong. Even if you intend to be a loose player, is is vital that you master the basics first. If you don’t then you will keep losing money and learn nothing.
